Seeing all this flooding in england...?

should we now try and dredge the rivers, streams and general waterways?
before we try and improve the drainage, not all towns, villages and hamlets have the sa,me drainege system that london or manchester has.
please don't preach to me about animals toxins and 'it's the way the world is ment to be blag blah blah...' as I know all about that side of my question.

Answer:
Not sure if dredging will actually do the trick, because you will inevitably dig to different depth - I read once that the uneven floor of the waterways will cause some form of undercurrent which will cause the water to drain at a slower rate as if it would just swoosh over a smooth surface. This in turn could mean the crucial inch that breaks the banks.

I lived in a flood plain for 5 years, right at the end of my garden was the river Ravensbourne. It has been straightened and encased in concrete. During the summer it was hardly carrying water but in Winter it could swell up to 2/3 of the walls.

I know, I know - ugly you wan to shout. And you are right! But if you have to build in flood plains and close to natural water ways and don't want to have wet feet, this is a relatively sure way of achieving that. So I propose to convert the waterways in question into canals and if you want to see a nice natural riverbed, go on holiday.
we should all build ourselves an arc before it happens again
Why don't you go to the vets and get the full nine yards?
i got stuck in the flooding.what normally takes 45 mins to get home took 2 and a half hours. its because they are starting at the wrong ends of the rivers and becks when putting in flood defences
We should not have built on the flood plains they exist for a purpose - they should be reinstated
we were a village years ago until people started building things,I think that we in this area are very lucky cause there not much damage,RIVER DE-WENT PEAKED AT MIDNIGHT,IT WAS 1.5METERS DEEP,5FEET,BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE BARRIERS,IF IT HAD GONE OVER WE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN TROUBLE,BUT EVERYTHING WAS OK THANK GOD, I REALLY FEEL SORRY FOR THE OTHERS PEOPLE WHO HAVE LOST EVERYTHING, MY HEART GOES OUT TO ALL OF THEM.
Nature will always prevail - so don't interfere with her. You people in england should try to live in harmony with nature not always try changing it for your own gain.
Most of my friends houses have flooded and my town has flooded too, its all down to bad drainage. Do what you want but get rid of the water :-(
Not being an engineer,I ca'nt answer your question, but I do think that we cannot sustain the present level of house building on flood plains without building new drainage systems before building commences. There are a shortage of homes but there are better ways of solving the housing crisis without always building brand new on new sites. There are thousands of homes sitting empty and abandoned that should be compulsory purchased by local councils, out of work people on job seekers could be made to train as builders to refurbish as affordable homes for people. This would help both housing and unemployment, but this is too sensible a suggestion in today's Britain.Common sense does not exist in government.
My husband has worked all weekend dredging rivers around Sheffield and it must be working. I think we have to do what we can, but drainage has to be improved to avoid flooding again. The rivers will only build up again over time and the problem will return. People dump all kinds of things into rivers and over time all the crap builds up!!! Same old story. We have to look after our world.
we shud never have built on the flood plain in the first place but...

every method has good and bad points and the main problem is that we dont always know what consequences our actions will have

look at that place where they dredged the sea for the shingle and a whole village was lost mainly because of it
I used to wonder why people would want to live on barges in Camden locks. Now I know!
where do you get the money ?
