Cable cars over london?

Why don't they construct a huge network of cable cars to haul people across London.

It would surely ease inner city transportation problems. And the cost would not be all that great, and they could go quite fast.
The stations could be the roofs of existing high-rise buildings.

Answer:
Not practical I'm afraid but good to see some looking outside the box.

I think a moving platforms like conveyor belts could cut out the need for buses and cars in the inner city area.
noo
no too dangerous
and there is no landunderneath for a pylon every 5 nmetres to support it ...
plus too expensive compared to doubling the buses instead
Hugely expensive.
Need a huge network. get off, get on, get off, get on, etc...
Need larger terminus at the end of each line, like the underground.
How would you get 100s or 1000s of people to the top of these buildings?
A real eyesore.
Great idea. Why not make it a planning condition of all new buildings that they have to lift the rural landscape onto the rooftop so that farmers can go from roof to roof with their tractors over bridges and people can enjoy outside spaces.

The Youtube link below shows how this is being done in China. He speaks fast so you may have to watch it a couple of times.

that's so cool
why not write in to red ken and suggest it?
no not possible didyu see the street of london tis very narrow plus its too expencive
The capital and operating costs would be prohibitive. For example -
Most high buildings are not designed to take the lateral stresses on the roofs that such a construct would involve.
Then how do you economically transport people up and down
from ground level to your stations on the roofs.
Buildings in central London are already very busy workplaces,
how can you realistically justify the disruption involved in the construction and operation of such a scheme.
Sorry! That kite will not fly.
i think any idea for mass transit is a good one. monorails and subways are definately excellent also. i think urban planning is very important nowadays. i dont know if it would make much sense to have cable cars with stations atop of high rise buildings but definately any mass transit that can run on alternative fuels or be efficient people movers are a great idea.
Maybe they could spruce up the old underground. A few more train routes.

How about a smaller self drive train that you can bypass the stations that you don't want to stop at. (Or have to wait for)
