Why do some people become so defensive when you question their religion of global warming?

Answer:
Because it is inconvenient for them to admit that this cause is a religion. "Religion" might make people wonder about the advisability to join and contribute. And it might be a false one, shown by failure in results or inability to withstand scrutiny. You will notice they spring to the offense as most religions do, by attempting attack on the doubters.

Well, you can deny it is a religion by artificially defining a religion as requiring a specific god. Many religions have a pantheon of gods they appeal to. But they are religions. Some claim not to know their god. And some. like Humanism, make Mankind their god, or more usually, a subset of mankind who know more than the common rabble. A gnostic faith.

However you define it, that to which you dedicate your life, and make your goals and actions conform and fight against those who would challange the truth and priority
(blastphemers), occupies the position of your god. Even if it is a concept, not an object, or seems wholly imaginary.

Global warming. The Consensus says this is the right, everybody who challenges in any way is wrong. There is the US Evangelist and High Priest, Al Gore, who has special privileges and flies around to gain converts to the faith. Articles are put in papers and magazines to convert folks to this idea, and urge people to join the faith, the all-knowing Consensus.

They have a faith, unproven. They have converts and are pushing for more. They have a Priesthood dedicated to the cause, they have an evangelist at least in this country, and they ridicule anybody who disagrees, and their opponents opinions are suppressed in great measure. Their Faith is not open to dispute or question. And they demand that civil authority bow to the Faith and act on it.

Sounds almost like the civil religion in the Middle Ages, doesn't it? Hmmm...but will "it" be found to move nevertheless??

So, since their faith they know deep inside is built on shifting sands, so far, naturally they become very defensive and lash out when challenged or questioned.
So I guess the whole 'Any scientific theory I disagree with is a religion' fad is back in eh? I thought this whole thing was settled way back when ignorant people were still flitting about denying evolution. No matter, it'll fade into obscurity soon enough, it always has. All the same, I'll explain this for you guys one last time, so you can't accuse me later of not having at least tried to put this nonsense to rest.

Global warming can't be a religion. It doesn't fit the definition of the word. In order for something to be a religion it has to involve some sort of belief in a divine being, which global warming theory doesn't. In fact, there isn't anything at all in common between acceptance of a scientific theory and religious belief. One requires faith, the other doesn't. It always amazes me that people are not intelligent enough to figure this one out on their own.

-----------------------------
Anyway, to answer your question, they don't. It's been my experience that global warming theory proponents are more than willing to help you understand the theory, and are usually quite good at explaining any misunderstandings you may have about it. They don't get defensive at all, and in fact =encourage= people to be skeptical of the theory, just so long as their skepticism doesn't turn into denial or contrarianism.

-----------------------------
Looey, analogies are all fine and well, but they can be taken far too far. You've found one or two vague similarities between the two (look! Al Gore talks about global warming! Priests talk about religion! We could call him a priest! Lol!) and decided that similarity makes for equality. Which, even if your similarities were valid, obviously isn't true.

Since you apparently define religion as 'belief in anything ever', I suppose there's no reason why you couldn't consider global warming theory a religion. But what's the point in that? If you say that simply believing something is religious, than the word loses all meaning.

Now let's talk about the consensus. I assume you don't honestly believe that a group of scientists got together and had a vote to decide if global warming was real or not, right? Scientists reach a consensus when a large majority of scientists working independently all reach the same conclusions based on the available evidence. That is, consensus is what's left when the science has been done, not the other way round.
Didn't know someone's stance on global warming was considered a religion now.

But to try and answer your question, let me rephrase it: if you're asking about why people who believe in global warming get defensive if you try to disprove it then I would say it's because it's such a big deal. Global warming could have huge implications for our future (it could affect our economy, mess up countless habitats and ecosystems around the world, and affect our food supply, just to name a few things). So, people get so worked up about it because they probably feel very strongly about their position - passionate even. They don't take it lightly, and neither should anyone.
Maybe because you call science a religion. Maybe because you question that science by spreading misinformation and lies. Maybe because doing these things is quite possibly leading to the destruction of the human race.

Or maybe because you confuse logical arguments with defensiveness. That's the most likely explanation.
There just touchy subjects for some is all. Try not bringing up those subjects is conversation, there plenty of other things to talk about.
But Global Warming is a Religion...

And Al Gore is the high priest.

it doesn't matter that Al Gore plans to make huge profits from his carbon credits scam

It doesn't matter that Al Gore's "carbon footprint" is 400 times as large as the average American's'...

He's the guru of global warming. The high pooh bah of conserving fuel. (as he flys around the country in a private jet wasting thousands of pounds of jet fuel to go make speeches and get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars)
Because they know their religion is on shaky grounds. In this case, their bible is the report written by the prophets hired by the UN. And the computer models they wrote themselves prove their prophets are right. And they even have Apocalyptic writings:

"Maybe because doing these things is quite possibly leading to the destruction of the human race." -- Dana1981
probably because they find you offensive. nothing to do with the topic.
Why do you falsify what they say? When you give it labels (religion) it seems that you are threatened by it. Maybe you should stick to promoting your belief, not look down on other peoples believes.
One last thing. In your other post, "Why should I care about whats going to happen in 100 years?" you said "I could care less what you people think.", so why should we bother answering you? I believe that you care a lot, maybe you seek attention by posting argumentative views. Shouldn't you tend to something more productive?
because it is fake...
NO NO NO=NO NO
Religion is from the imagination of Men and has power as a motive

Global warming is reality and defies the imagination and the power of destruction is an effect not a motive

And usually Religious people makes this statement,

Because they can only understand concepts like religions
they cannot deal with realities
Seems like all the "devout" folks are feeling a bit persecuted by the looks of their answers.

Methinks thou doth protest too much.

I don't know what they think about GW, but it is definitely not science. How many times have you heard the phrase, "I believe in Global Warming"? How many times have you heard, "the debate is over"? Or "they've proven"? "You should believe the experts because they know better than you." None of those things are part of valid science.

But you might find that part of a religion.

My favorite is the one that follows along the lines of, "it doesn't matter whether global warming is real or not, we have to act now to avoid disaster." The failure to accept the lunacy of this irrational belief smacks of religion, albeit a pretty shabby one.
