Does farting contribute to global warming and degradation of the ozone layer? Is it a health harzard to others?

Answer:
Yes, I'm afraid that flatulence, at least among cows, is one of the leading causes of global warming. Really.

I answered this question a few months back for Ask Yahoo!. Here's what I wrote:

"The United Nations has declared the methane from cow emissions the "greatest threat to the climate, forests, and wildlife." Livestock emissions are responsible for 18% of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming. That's more than all forms of transportation put together."

I couldn't find any sources that claim human farts have an adverse effect on the environment, so feel free to toot to your heart's content. Unless you're in an elevator, in which case, try to hold it.

Below are some sources for further reading including a timeline of how the earth would be affected if humans suddenly disappeared. Rather chilling.

thanks,

Mike
afraid so
you sound real stupid
Cow farting does. It releases methane into the atmosphere.
Actually it does.. but not from humans.. from cows and sheep. And so does their belching!
Don't say that too loud, or the giggle-sissy liberals will want us all to go around with a cork stuck up our assholes.
Hold in your farts and you will spontaniosly cumbust, let it go freely and destroy the ozone... The answer is to fart in moderation.
Thats part of the theory canonized by Global Warming Alarmists. Evidently there is some laboratory evidence that methane gas can have an insulating effect on an enclosed object, but there has been no explanation offered as to why cow and sheep ( and human) farting didn't cause Global Warming prior to 1750. Recall that human physiology requires a minimum amount of protein thats not available in vegetables or fruits, so we've eaten meat to cover that requirement for untold thousand of years without causing the polar icecaps to melt.
Farting is a recent phenomenon caused by the illegal American occupation of America! Before that there was no farting at all, only perfuming. We the members of the Future Alliance of Retarded Toadhuggers (FART) Demand a UN ban of all farting done by anything anywhere in the global planet thingy we are on. First offence is punished with a ticket. Say if a cow or a water buffalo farts, the UN Gaskeeper for that area issues the offending creature a ticket to appear before the World Gastronomic Discharge Court and explain themselves. Second offence is a jail sentance in the Global Interspecies Correction Prison of Understanding and Love, Third offence they become the subject of a barbeque. (yum!) Unite with us in this struggle for gaseous justice!!!!!!
Most definitively a health hazard to others! :-)
Yes. Algore and then greenies will want to tax that too.
Beano and carbon credits on the house!
Only SBD's...
Invent Fart Farms that bean eaters can feed their methane through tubes to compression tanks. These tanks of methane can be sold on the market to fuel automobiles. Anyone who complies can be rewarded with Fart Credits.
Methane gas is a greenhouse gas, it does contribute to Global Warming. methane gas also reacts with ozone, so it does contribute to degradation of the ozone layer.

It is unpleasant, but I am not aware of any health hazards.
The alternative is spontaneous combustion. I say better out than in. Just be a little couth around the fairer sex about it.
