How to stop the ever expanding car population in India?

What will happen if every Indian owns a fuel guzzler... dint we live on this earth happily even before the automobile was invented..

Answer:
Adopt the policies Singapore has in place!

1. Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) - "an electronic system of road pricing based on a pay-as-you-use principle. It is designed to be a fair system as motorists are charged when they use the road during peak hours."

2. Vehicle Quota System - "Under this system, LTA determines the number of new vehicles allowed for registration while the market determines the price of owning a vehicle.

In determining the number of cars allowed for registration, we take into account the prevailing traffic conditions and the number of vehicles taken off the roads permanently.

The quota allocated to each vehicle category is in proportion to that category's share of the total vehicle population. The vehicle quota for a given year is administered through the monthly release of Certificates of Entitlement (COEs)."

there are many more at the webbie below but these are the best 2. and the more effective of the two is the second. the one about COEs.
Well its a vry emerging question......I think that increasing population is the main cause behind this problem.....so first n foremost we shud control the population of our country..Secondly, our govt. shud be very impartial among the richers..people shud not be allowed to hav more than 2 cars in any nuclear family.....This will help a lot..also in decreasing the parking problems....wid less pollution....Thus jst by controlling car population we can deal wid many problems..Last but not the least...we individuals shud feel our responsibilty towards these curious problems.....
maybe the government should start giving insentives for people who use public transport, or reduce tax for families with one car only?
Cull the human population. There are too many people in India.

I can see why you are worried. India has the second largest population(first being China). If everyone in India owns a car, then that will add CO2 in a year what Americans produce in three years. Then in this case, we would have to have to charge people for driving, so that they will drive less with India being a developing country in the world and everyone trying to preserve their earnings. I also agree that we did live happily on this earth befor the car was invented, but the car has become the way of life. In fact, about 100 years ago, people were more fit and healthy because half of them would walk to work, etc. So, there is really no way that mankind can live without the automoblie, but we can find alternate fuel sources
One way to decrease the number of cars is to invest heavily in public transport and tax the use of private cars heavily to support it.
In Japan, parking is expensive, gas is expensive, heck- everything is! So the population are called upon to use PUBLIC transportation, and according to the latest report, only 10000 deaths in 2006 were from traffic accidents. That, is really small, in comparison to 127,000,000 Japanese population. The key is to use good, efficient, reliable system of transport like Japan's. India needs to develop a reliable system of public transportation and reliable maintenance , too.
Okay brother my name is vivek i am Spc in US Army soon going to iraq ,as i saw your question i can not stop my self for my comments, a simple answer for your question is ,when we are going to control over enormousley growing population we are going to controle over car population too.
Another social answer of this problem is nuclear families if we keep on bracking the families in to small groups more and more need for the extra automobile is going to genrate .
Yes we did lived happley before the machines but at that time we use to burn more wood and coal to creat pollution....okay think in this was POPULLATION and POLLUTION sound same so solution is same too..
take care buddy
India shouldn't repeat America's mistake, they'd be better off committing the country to alternative-fuel vehicles, and then exporting that technology to China and Africa. Electrics, plug-in hybrids and biodiesels. Electrify the railroads too and put in high-speed rail.

They've sure got the engineering smarts. They're already a nuclear armed state, so nobody's going to mind them building nuclear power. They've got the weather for wind, solar and high-yield oil crops. Seems like India could do OK.
