Help.hippie daughter!?
We do homeschooling based on what she is interested in then plug in math, reading, etc into that interest. So, I guess my question is..
Does anyone know of good kid friendly sites that I can help base our studies around? Or any sites that would basically just help me out? We have just started the whole organic gardening/eating different thing and are trying very hard to learn more. Global warming, environment, etc
Answer:
Its wonderful that you homeschool .. I was and I got soo much crap from other parents and teachers about it being bad ... When I was homeschooled my mother used to make me write essays on things I saw on tv or things I liked so I had to research... We also went to different places and volenteered as a learning experience. Such as animal shelter, homeless shelter, christs pantry... farms ... That sort of thing!

Perhaps you already know about Mother Earth News, but if not it will be the jackpot for you -- excellent articles on environmentally friendly lifestyles.

Hey Mom,
Well, it seems to me that you have a project in front of you that would be cool to do together.
Make this an assignment.. Do the online research together.. Contact some of the major organizations in this area and ask for their input.
You have a very bright, precocious daughter... Have fun watching her bloom.
Good Luck
Try Mother Earth News both Magazine and website archives; permaculture magazine, earthday network, lifelab gardening; or just do a web search on kids and whatever subject you want to query.
CyberschoolBus also is a good one on any topics addressed by the UN.
Since she is into recycling, and the biggest recycling is re-using - get yourself a compost bin, and check http://www.recyclethis.co.uk/ regularily. I do!
Tell her to ask teacher in their crafts lessons to use waste materials - plastic bottles, etc.
something that's beginning to catch on is "tiny houses". It's all about being minimalist, saving resources (and money) by having a tiny 'green' house. Many people still want huge homes, but more and more are looking into very small, efficient housing. Have her check out the "mobile hermitage" and small house society, this doesn't cover everything she is interested in, but is a very interesting topic to explore. You can 'plug in' math, art, gardening, nutrition, and home economics by having her design to scale a green tiny house, with, say, a garden/patio roof.
Prevention magazine has been a standard in healthy organic living for generations now, I am sure they probably have a website. There also used to be a magazine called the mother earth news that was full of good info back when the hippies first started to go 'back to nature'. Don't know if it's still around...
i saw this on an article by the Wall Street Journal. it might be something that would be fun for your kid. Carbon Diet Plan, which lists ways to improve one's ecological profile "and provides inspiration for your friends to do the same."
yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
One good site I know of is www.americanforests.org. It has all kinds of info. You might also want to teach her about earth friendly cleaning products. Every little bit makes a difference. : )
One good site to check out is Conservation International [ http://www.conservation.org ]. You can get a list of environmentally friendly tips and keep up to date about what's going on with the world's environment.
Try quorn as a chicken substitute. Its made from mushrooms, and its a great source of protein. It also tastes just like chicken. My non-veg roommate eats it all the time and his 5yr old nephew loved it when he tried it.
I have found that there is a ton of free information on the Mother Earth News website. Their magazine is really great also. My dad got the mag for years andI still use them for reference.
check out davesgarden.com Very cool for plants etc.
Proud Army Wife: Try recipeczar.com for some recipes for vegetarian meals or different ways to prepare chicken using the new garden resources you have. Good luck, and a big HOOAH to you and you daughter going green.
How awesome for you and your Daughter! :)) I love the idea that you are so supportive of her excitement and exploration!
Check your area and see what local Coops are available for classes (normally a very nominal fee if any), they have some great newsletter, love volunteers, yes even her age, perhaps they are getting ready for a plant sale and need a volunteer etc. The reason I suggest these are being around more and more folks who have followed in what she's interested in already can really share their knowledge with her and she'll have so much to soak up, she'll love it!
Best of luck to you both in your new adventures of Helping this Planet & benifiting each one of us. I'll share more as I find things that may help in her interests. I'm learning so much about all of this myself more recently.so exciting to be a positive effect on society as I continue to learn. I wonder too, not knowing what area you live in, if you may have local organic farmers who wouldn't just love to give you all a tour and share what they know and no doubt they'll have others they can hook you up with as well.
Sarah H :)
I do not know how to answer your question regarding food.. but for "Trash" what is your trash someone else in your community might want/need.. such as used clothes.. broken items... toys.. etc.. things you dont want anymore but know someone would be happy to have it..
check out your local Freecycle(tm) Group.
