Reducing carbon footprint?

So, long story short I want to try and start making a difference in my lifestyle so that I can reduce my carbon footprint.

I'm about to buy a new car and I wanted to get some opinions of whether I should buy a hybrid (or alternate power) car or save the money and use that cash to try and say save energy costs with solar power... just some advice or opinions please! :)

Answer:
Buy a car with an MPG (miles per gallon) of at least 30. Below is a website that shows every cars' MPG and impact on the environment. You don't really need to get a hybrid because some hybrids have lower gas mileage than some gas powered cars. For example, the Saturn Aura Hybrid gets 24 mpg in the city and 32 on the highway, and the Honda Civic gets 25 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway.

There are also many simple ways to reduce your carbon footprint.
1. replace 5 or more incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs
2. replace any old appliances with new Energy Star ones*
3. have your hot water heater set no higher than 120 degrees
4. use a ceiling fan instead of an air conditioner
5. have your thermostat set at around 75 degrees in the summer and 65 in the winter
6. use less hot water when taking a shower
7. always wash cloths in cold water
8. let the sun dry your cloths on hot sunny days
9. always wash with full loads
10. recycle as much as possible

*Energy star products like refrigerators, dish washers, and TVs use about 20% less energy than products without an energy star
Marry me.
ride a bike instead. that will really make a difference.
Be careful with hybrids. Make sure they actually get good MPG. A small Toyota or Honda can actually get better mileage than many hybrids, and it will leave you a lot more money for solar and other good energy saving devices.
