Saving ENERGY?

rather than have ALL the street lights lit up on the motorways, why doesn't the gov. light up only every other light?

surely this would mean big saving to the treasury and environment...

any comments?

Answer:
The government is stupid. They have all these commercials about the citizens cutting back on electricity and paper&plastic and stuff, when they are hardly doing anything to help the environment!
Surely they could cut back on street lights, we don't need them all. And plus they turn on the street lights too early. In the summer they start to turn them on at like 7 oclock. When in reality, it doesn't get dark until like 9 or 10 oclock. It makes absolute no sense.
And you are right. It would save a lot of electricity if they did cut back on street lights, but they choose not to. All they care about is their money, but in the long run, they'll realise on how much of a mistake they made by waisting electricity and making the world a worse place. Good question, by the way.
Better still, have motion sensors that turn them on and off...
the distant between street lights determines the speed you can travel, you'll notice in built up areas there are more lights, so the speed limit is lower.
hope this helps.
heehee I suddenly feel so clever, I dont ofter answer seriously.
Great idea from Tall Paul for motorway lights.Every other light on in streets would also be cool. What if Shops turned off their lights at night when they are shut.Security shouldn't be a problem if they are alarmed.
Good idea. May find there is some regulation dictating spacing, and some idiot will sue them if one is out.
The gov't could just light up 1/2 the normal amount of lights. Then again, the large power companies that pay the gov't to see to it that we use as much power as possible would then not pay the gov't cause they would have their revenues cut back...

Also, if someone started leaving sections unlit at night, I am sure someone would find a way to crash their car in an unlit section and then blame the gov't, collect their insurance then use that money to sue the gov't for more money!

Governments do not exist to save money. They take money (yours) then spend it how they see fit (usually to their cronies & supprters). With the little bit left over they make new laws to prevent you from ever getting your money back. (You do realize that the national debt is a debt owed to you and every other voting citizen that the gov't has overspent and will never pay back?) The only way to motivate gov't to save energy is to see to it that somehow more money will go into their pockets. Greed is a universal motivator (which is why smoking has never been stamped out like it should be... cigarette companies have too much money to ever be put out of business!)
I've thought about this as well, so not surprisingly I think it's a good idea.

While we have hundreds of miles of unlit motorway we also have hundreds of miles of motorway (M60 for example) that is entirely lit throughout the night when the volume of traffic on it doesn't require lighting from a safety point of view.

It seems almost elementary and I can't undestand why the powers that be haven't switched onto this one either. Not only is there the energy and carbon savings but it might help reduce light pollution and the orange glow that fills our urban skies.

Perhaps it's time for a letter to the appropriate minister.
I'm not sure where you live, but in my city, all of the residential street lights are periodically rotated. One will go off for a couple of minutes, then another. It is done to save energy. Contact your city and suggest it.
The reason they don't is probably because not enough citizens have spoken up. They work for you...tell them what you want.

the council here decided in their infinite wisdom, to switch off the street-lights to save money.
all it did was increase the crime rate.
they switched off from 12 midnight onward & saved a million or so, which don't mean much to the people who suffered the increase in crime!
In my youth the local authority turned the lights off at 1.00 a.m. and in winter turned them on again at 6.00.
