How long does it take for smoke to clear from the residential neighborhood?

We just had a major fire three blocks away (in Philly). Our block is filled with smoke now and the buildings are still smoking. Will this affect our health and how long will it tkae for smoke to clear our neighborhood? Also, we live close to the top of the hill.

Answer:
It will depend on the wind, but the smoke should disperse in about 4 hours, though the area may still smell and you'd do well to air the house out after the worst of it has passed. The fireman will probably extinguish the smoldering areas or monitor it. Hopefully the wind and wind direction will keep this additional smoke from being a serious problem for you.

Could be worse: the fire could have been closer to home. God bless anyone displaced or harmed during the fire.
Amazing. You live and breath filthy air 24/7 all the time and you are worried about a short episode of smoke in the air.

The air will clear out in a day from the fire. This acute exposure will probably not harm you. It is the air you breath every day that really harms you.
well if u stop smoke from the past three month then u will see the work that u did ur self
Well, second hand smoke is the newest rage sweeping the country. So, it sure can't be good for you. I would get out of town for a week or so. It will go away by then. You don't smoke do you?
