When you go down to the recycling center to get some cash for your bottles...?

When you recycle your bottles for some extra cash at the recycling center, I know you have to take off the lid. Do you have to take off the paper? Can your crush it yourself? Thanks! I live in CA.

Answer:
I live in CA, too. Most places want the caps off because they are not made of glass and add extra work for the employees. Leave the label alone, and do not crush them. Cans are okay to crush, glass is a definite no.

Also, some places are not required to pay you the full redemption value. They pay by weight which comes out to be less, so be sure and shop around for the best redemption.

Good luck!!
Only thing we get money for here in Iowa is the nickel deposit on beer and soda bottles and cans.

We get nothing for plastic, metal, or glass containers. We have wash them take the lids off. Labels can be left on,deposit beer and soda bottles and cans must not be crushed. Other cans you can if you want.
Most of the time you can leave the labels on, but they don't want you to crush the glass. Most of the glass is separated by color for processing.
In Mich. Its marked a 10 cent deposit. At a "Thrifty Acres" you just put in the the dispenser and it reads the bar code, its all automatic
When I went I didn't have to crush the cans but I went to a Food-4-Less and all I had to do was put them in a machine but thats a rip off they say you get more money if you actually go down to a recycling center which I will be doing tomorrow. There will be people there that will help you out plus when I see people dig in the trash they all crush their cans so I think you have to but I don't. Good luck and glad to hear you're recycling! :-)
You do not have to take off the paper, i don'tknowhow you would crush the bottles. That would be quite a chore and messy too!(unless they are plastic) All you have to do is take your bottles in and the recycling center does the rest. Hope this helps!
I am not all that familiar with Chicago recycling, but I am from Milwaukee, and I think that the general rule of thumb is that you don't have to take the labels off. It might be true that you have to take the caps off. In Milwaukee, through regular pick-up recycling, we could leave the caps and labels on.

The can crushing bit, I don't think is necessary. Most people including my dad use it as a way to save space, so that he can collect more cans before actually going to the recycling center himself. It means more cash back that way. I'm sure if you plan on going often, it returns the same amount of money, but in the long run, you use less gas making one trip. :)
no u do not need to take off the paper and I think it would be easier on the recyclers if u crush the cans and bottles yourself.
