What name do we give to the steep sided valley caused when waterfall moves backwards?
Answer:
It's not a gorge.
It's a "sinous glen within steep vertical walls of rock, at the foot of which yet lie great heaps of fallen material."
Basically there is a little spreading that takes place within the walls due to the difference in the composition of the rocks, from the hard top layer, to the softer layers underneath.
gorge
"...when a waterfall moves backwards"? A little confusing. Do you mean when a waterfall moves upstream due to erosion?
Using Niagara Falls and Niagara Gorge as an example I'd have to say gorge
a 'gorge'
The geographical term is a "gorge"
Is it politically OK to use the word 'Gorge'?
If it isn't how about Canyon or Ravine?
a V shaped valley.
