Worlwide energy saving proposal! Take note and Spread the voice!?

It has been proposed that on AUGUST 11th, SATURDAY of 2007, from 19:53 PM. to 20:00 PM. in the Central Time Zone for USA, Canada and Mexico (GMT - 6 or UTC - 6), everyone that reads this is encouraged to turn off their lights and hungry-power home-appliances like fridges, air conditioners, dishwashers, computers and TV's (turn off the freakin' Reality Show, for Christ sake!) and give our beloved planet a well-deserved break. Just seven minutes, turn everything off, and expect the response.
Be aware of the major problems of the planet; we caused them and we live in it, so it's not just Greenpeace again. Greenhouse effect, Ozone layer holes, global warming... If seven minutes of your time can make a difference, then please rise from the couch and cooperate.
Cover your eyes with adhesive and relax, but more importantly, don't turn on the TV.
The Internet is a powerful tool, let's use it for good and spread the voice by any means possible, and do it yourself too. THX in advance.

Answer:
Hey great idea .Is the power company going to put out the fire in the coal burner to for 7 minutes to ? I cant see one good thing that would come out of it . I wonder how long it would take my fridge to re cool.
Turning off everything else is fine, but the fridge? Doesn't that spoil the food, even if it's only 7 minutes? Other than that, not a bad idea. Seems like so little but at least it helps.
In Australia we did the same thing and made it a competition between cities to see which city could become the darkest be turning off non essential lighting on monuments statues, bridges, and other aesthetically illuminated buildings. Traffic lights and street lights stayed on but for one hour (or for as long as possible) everyone switched off the lights. I found that most of the lights that were on had no use and we now try and turn off lights as often as possible for example when watching TV. Its a great idea ands shows how much of a difference individuals can make when banded together.
Its a dumb idea. What if everyone turns everything back on at 20:01 and trips the main breaker at the power company?
Like "Jeopardy" on TV, you have to put your answer in the form of a question.

"Worldwide energy saving proposal! Take note and Spread the voice!?" was not a question, despite the addition of an unnecessary question mark.

You should've asked, "What do you think of my plan to save energy?"

I think it is a great idea. Do it!

We'll STILL have a "Greenhouse effect", "Ozone layer holes", and global warming 7 minutes later...but we'll have TRIED to do something!

Little things mean a lot. The longest journey starts with the first step...or the first thought of taking step.

BUT there's a lot more we need to do than this!
Your plan has several flaws.

First of all the power company still has to generate electricity. Turning out the lights and turning off the refrigerator will not save any energy.

Second of all, when starting back up, a motor requires much more energy than when it is up to speed and running.

When you turn all of those refrigerators back on all at the same time you will create a huge power demand on the utility. That power demand will much greater than they normally have to provide.

At the very least this will waste energy, the utility will probably have to purchase electricity or turn on some standy generators to handle the additional load for a few minutes, or the additional demand will trip the circuit breakers and burn out the transformers of the utility.
Nice idea, but the other answerers have already pointed out the many flaws. It would have to be a week or so to make much of a difference, not just seven minutes. Try getting people to live without electric for a week. Efforts are better spent getting people to conserve a bit every day.
It is a great idea. The problem is, though, it draws more power to turn everything back on then it would to just leave it on. In fact the massive sudden demand could sap the entire power grid(s) and cause a blackout.
Well I am a lucky one here!! My province, got 90% of its electricity from renewable source... Hydro power... So shutting down everything will only help my state energy company to sell it to the US... And, I don`t know why, I prefer to let my fridge open...
Anyways my carbon footprint is about 0.05, if it does made any differences...
it is great.who made the proposal
Good idea.

No, it will not harm the food in fridge. It will last much longer than that.

No, it will probably not hurt the power company very much. It may cause some plant shutdowns, if EVERYONE did it. LOL

The power company can't generate power unless the load is there to generate to. They just have to back down or shut down.

Why don't everyone do this every day at anytime of the day they like? Wouldn't hurt anything and will save energy.
Please do so, then on that day i can run MY ac with the doors and windows open , as well as burn that pile of tires Ive been saving.
