Question for those who are pro-fabric grocery shopping bags?
My question is for those who use fabric bags-- Don't you still use plastic trash bags(i.e. Glad trash bags or those big black plastic bags) to throw trash in? If so, why not just use grocery bags?
Thanks
Answer:
Yes, I use fabric trash bags. But no, I don't use big plastic bags glad trash bags, or any of those products.
To line our kitchen garbage, I use a heavy duty (non recyclable) department store bag which is rinsed out and hung on the line to dry and disinfect, after it's been emptied in the trash bins.
For the occasional plastic grocery store bag we sometimes end up with, they either get recycled, donated to a food pantry, or placed in a mutt mitt tower in public parks.
We use one or two cloth bags when we shop and get paper for the rest. These we use to line our trash recepticle and for other purposes. When we get too far ahead we recycle the paper bags.
Paper bags seem a lot better for 2nd and 3rd uses than plastic bags, and when the cats play with them I don't have to worry about suffication. Once the cat got tangled in a plastic bag and ran terrified down the hallway. I felt so bad for her.
That, and you generally don't see paper bags floating around the park on windy days.
I use recycled trash bags, and fabric grocery bags.
I usually have no choice in the matter. Most of the stores I go to don't even have plastic bags...you have to either bring your own cloth bag or buy them from the store at the check out. The cloth bags have grown on me though, living in a city where I have to walk and take public transportation. They hold a lot more and are a lot easier on your hands (I hate the way the plastic digs into your palms).
I use cloth shopping bags. I also am picky about what I purchase to have little to no packaging that is wasted. Between recycling and being careful about purchases, I have very little that I have to throw away. I only use the garbage service about once a month. I still end up with the occasional plastic bag (from the hardware store usually) and use them for garbage.
It's almost impossible to eliminate ALL plastic, but eliminating as much as you can will really help. The canvas bags for shopping are great! They're stong, washable, and hold more.
If you really want to be green, you can find 'other' plastics that we use around the house that are more eco-friendly than what we're used to using.

No more excuses!
One I need environmental advice so coudl you email, me. What my family does is use the green fabric bags when we run to the store to get a small amount of items. When we go shopping for the week we will use the paper bags and then use them to but our garbage in.. I thing it is a good idea the bag gets used twice.
