How does sewage affect the environment?

I need to complete a science presentation on this.

Answer:
There is alot of information on this topic that is more than can be presented here including pictures and diagrams. Go to the references to see the complete story.

If treated properly, sewage should have a minimal impact on the environment. It is in the non-industrialized countries where there is no treatment that the impact on the environment is great including ecosystem destruction and environmental system changes.
Sewage water when dumped into the sea naturally causes death of aquatic beings coz they tend to be in that water. Or after processing the sewage the harmful stuff is put into the ocean or buried so it effects the respective beings. It contains all kinds of radioactive stuff etc.
Sewage in the environment
Untreated sewage discharges can have a significant impact on the environment. The collection and treatment of sewage, and appropriate disposal of the sewage sludge generated as a by-product of sewage treatment, are key contributors to our success in helping to maintain and improve the quality of coastal waters, lakes and rivers running through our cities, towns, villages and countryside.
Well, Im no scientist but I can tell you that (1) It poisons the area around it and (2) It stinks up the immediate area.
Sewage when untreated and left into the sea has an adverse effect on environment. The water colour changes and it becomes of a darker shade like if it was light blue it would become a bit dark even the animals and marine creatures are effected by this. The nearby area starts to stink. People living in those areas are affected especially their health.A link to a site where it is stated how waste pipes affect the environment is there below. You can even try out on google or on wikipedia these are the 2 sites which might be able to help you.
Sewage contains nutrients. When it is added into the water, it would cause massive algae growth. Excessive growth of algae is considered toxic . Too much algae growth could cause choke off all life in the water by stealing the oxygen. In the ocean some of these algae bloom are called red tide. It smelss bad and the algae is toxic. it can make the shelfish in the area toxic. Sewage, untreated can also spread diseases. To much coliform makes it hazardeous to swin and sewage leaked into fresh water makes the water hazardeous to drink. Some sewage contains toxic chemicals that can build up in animals, like lead and mercury.
Untreated sewage, contains organic waste and nutrients when disposed to the environment will result in an overpopulation of plants and algae. This would led to oxygen depletion which kills off fishes and other marine life.

The contaimated water is unsafe for drinking and contains disease-causing bacteria and parasites that would result in outbreaks of diseases.

Commonly found in the sewage
1) Bacteria (Aeromonas, Clostridium, E. coli, Salmonella)
2) Viruses (Hepatitis, Norwalk, Rotavirus)
3) Parasites (Cryptosporidium)

and is also a breeding ground for mosquitoes
(carriers of Western Equine Encephalitis & West Nile Virus)
