I got stung by a portugese manowar in new york and i wanted to know my chances of getting stung again?

is it like a once in a lifetime thing? is it like... more common lately since the tides/ocean currents or whatever are changing?

Answer:
Wow, you sure are a long way away from Portugal. Basically once one of those mo' fo's stings you it "marks" you with a chemical scent. When you go back in the water the jellyfish can detect it from hundreds of miles away and will swarm all over you to finish the job. Kinda like killer bees. Cruel, but such is the ways of wild animals.
It's never a once in a lifetime thing, as long as you enter the ocean you enter their territory. If they happen to be around you may get whipped again. Just remember, they aren't attacking you, they just move along with the current. Always keep a bottle of white vinegar with you, never touch the stung area(s), and just pour the vinegar over it and LET IT SIT! Don't rinse with water or bathe until the stinging sensation has passed, and don't stay in the sun, or go back in the ocean. Good luck!
NO its definitely not a once in a lifetime thing. Usually you will see more of them around if the tide is going/coming in or out but it depends on the weather, water temp and a bunch of other stuff (they tend to like the warmer water)
Didn`t like it too much, didja?

The Jellyfish invasion has just begun!
Did it hurt? Shake it off. And it's not like lightning, it will strike you twice.
dont go outside and you should be ok

Sometimes the sea is full of them
