What will people with porphyria do if we have to use fluorescent lights?

Porphyria causes burns and blisters on the skin in the presence of sunlight, halogen light and fluorescent light. Migraine sufferers and those with certain types of lupus are also sensitive to fluorescent light.

Answer:
"You bring up good points. you must be silenced. We can't worry about the minority! we must have our way. we must imposed. if you have a problem with our new lights, that's a 'you problem'."

And with that Al Gore climbs into his jet and flies home.
I don't understand... maybe without racking my brain too much, they could... not use fluorescent lights. Why on earth would someone who gets sick from some form of light be forced to be exposed to it?

That's like asking what to do if people that are allergic to penicillin are forced to use penicillin...
As with everything else in the world, I'm sure they would make exceptions based on medical conditions...
I'm sorry to hear about your condition.

At some point, LEDs will be the way to go, but they are WAY too expensive to consider for whole home lighting.

Root for a ban and then sue the pants off of the government and any environmental groups that lobby for this ridiculous legislation.
You must consider yourself clever, so, please, come up with a solution, and let us all know about it!

We need more people working on these problems-maybe you can call the President and clue him in! He would make a special Law I`m sure!

There is no reason why compact fluorescents to cause more problems for sufferers of porphyria. "Soft white" or "warm white" compact fluorescents have almost exactly the same spectrum of light as incandescent bulbs. They're not at all like "daylight" or "cool white" fluorescent lights which cause the problem..
The LED lights (that one person suggested) are dropping in price rapidly so those really could be a practical option. Another option would be to place UV filter gels over the offending bulbs. Lastly there is a dirty sneaky trick to get around the problem! The proposed bans do NOT apply to low-voltage landscape lighting (usually called Malibu lights)! It's not that big a deal to use wall warts (transformers) to power individual lights off AC outlets or simply run a string of them off a wall wart. I know quite a few folks with solar/wind power that use them indoors to avoid losses associated with stepping stored homegen power up to standard AC.

Edit:

Just to clarify the use of landscape lights indoors. Those of us with alternate power will run dedicated 12vdc lines just for lighting and any other 12vdc 'toys' we have. Taking power stored in batteries and stepping it back up to 'household' AC power carries a significant cost in terms of efficiency, it takes a LOT more power to run a compact fluorescent or 110AC LED bulb than to run a 12vdc7w bulb!
On a more practical note for this question, a 12vdc500ma transformer can easily run a 4w landscape spot indoors or a 12vdc1000ma can run a 12w landscape spot or area lamp. In either case those provide more than enough light to read by or provide general illumination if bounced off a white ceiling. I've been using those lamps indoors for years so I know of what I speak.
