Why is silk soymilk in aseptic packaging that can rarely be recycled?
Answer:
Some are. It depends on which one and what area you are in. From the Silk company website:
Is Silk product packaging recyclable?
Every area has different recycling rules so please check with your local recycling center for details. Here is some general information:
* Silk Live!® Soy Yogurt cups and caps are made from Polypropylene (PP), which is classified as a #5 plastic.
* Silk Soymilk cartons can be recycled after removing the plastic screw cap.
* Silk Shelf Stable quart cartons and 8.25 oz. prisma packs can be recycled in certain areas of the U.S.
* Silk Single Serves (11 oz. bottles) are in #1 containers and are recyclable after removing the plastic label.
* Silk Live!® Soy Yogurt containers are #5 and can be recycled in certain areas of the U.S. The lids can also be recycled.
At this point we feel that we are using the most environmentally friendly and cost-effective packaging available for our products, but we’re always looking to decrease the overall waste factor of our containers.
maybe you should try writing the company and get them to change it.. or maybe it needs that type of container to keep the integrity of the milk..
They do this for their yogurt products as well. I think we should all write them a letter and demand they change their packaging.
I would definitely write to them. It goes the same for a lot of those packages for frozen items. In Minneapolis you have to throw them in the garbage.
silk also gas the green caps promotion
amanda I'll tell u the same thing i told the last girl who asked this question:
no they cant be recycled because first they are paper but they are waxed with some plastic plus the carton is soiled with soymilk and any paper thats food soiled cant be recycled. It cant even be composted. I think your best bet is to find some way of reusing it as something else. sorry just wanted to let u know
