How many Ph.D.'s have been granted for Climatology and is there a list somewhere?

Answer:
This was a tough question!

Timothy Ball, by the way, is a retired professors with a PhD in Geography. He's most known for his work with the "Heartland Institute" a think-tank in Chicago that receives funding from ExxonMobil.

The best estimate I could find is from the American Geophysical Union (AGU) which claims there are over 49,000 scientists from over 140 countries specializing in the study of earth sciences, including climatology. The AGU issued a position on global warming in 2003 which reads:

"Human activities are increasingly altering the Earth's climate. These effects add to natural influences that have been present over Earth's history. Scientific evidence strongly indicates that natural influences cannot explain the rapid increase in global near-surface temperatures observed during the second half of the 20th century."
I don't know that you can a PhD in 'Climatology'. I believe you'd get a degree in something like atmospheric chemistry, or mathematics, and go on to specialize in climate study from there. But I really don't know.

That said, I think there are approximately 18,000 +/- 1000 climate scientists currently working in the US today. I'm not sure how many there have been in total.

Edit: The entire first bit I wrote was all wrong. Turns out you can get a PhD in climatology. I don't know that it's necessary to become a climate scientist though, since none I've ever met has had one.

And Timothy Ball, the self proclaimed 'First Canadian PhD in climatology' is actually the thirtieth or so Canadian PhD in climatology.
Dr. Timothy Ball was granted a Ph.D. by the Faculty of Geography of Queen Mary College of the University of London in 1983. Ball's thesis was on the topic of historical climatology and meteorology, but the college did not specify that the degree was in "climatology".

At various times, Ball has falsely claimed to be: a professor of climatology for 32 years at the University of Winnipeg; a professor of climatology for 28 years at the University of Winnipeg; and the first Canadian PhD in climatology. Actually, Ball was a professor of Geography at the University of Winnipeg for 8 years, Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Winnipeg for 5 years; an Assistant Professor of Geography at the University of Winnipeg for 1 academic year; and a lecturer in geography at Winnipeg for 5 years. There were many Canadian PhD's working in climatology long before Ball's degree was granted.
If anyone thinks that they can change the climate of a revolving planet, then they have given them self a Ph.D.
Global warming, and Global cooling has been Climate changes for this planet for millions of years.
So, at the end of the ice age, we had Global warming with no human interference.
OK, then it took thousands of years for man kind or I should say (politicians), to raise the fear in people about Global cooling. This happened in the 1970's. We had very cold winters, and the politicians said it was caused by us humans depleting the O-zone. The government took control and made laws that would cost all of us more money in tax's.
Since then we the people of this planet have put hundreds of ton's of crap in the air.
Guess what has happened? That's right! The O-zone is going back to normal. And all we had to do is pay more tax's to fix it over the last 30 to 40 years.
Now, we find our self's in a real pickle of a problem.
We are warming up again. There must be a problem with what we are doing again.
So, the fear mongers go back to work on the problem.
Well! It must be all the Carbons we are putting into the air!
Hay! We could call it Global Warming! I bet there is plenty of money we can scam out of the un educated public on this one.
The big problem is that all the Albert Gore,Jrs. in the world are trying to instill fear into the masses so they can get filthy rich off of us again. And 40 to 50 years from now when our climate changes again by natural causes, they will be trying to figure out how they can take all that money with them to their grave.
Sorry, My real point is that the weather man that is on TV can not predict the weather correctly most of the time. So what makes the politicians think they can.
