Bar B Qs and Fire pits ?

Are they environmentally dangerous, or is there better alternatives? And also is there a Health Issue?

Answer:
BBQs and fire pits are both bad for the environment. A single charcoal BBQ puts out about as much particulate matter as about 1000 properly-tuned-up, recent-model cars. (I assume that's per hour, but I don't remember.) A BBQ or a fire pit also puts out carbon monoxide and other pollutants.

Fortunately, most people don't use their Bar B Qs and fire pits very many hours per year. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram cites a Rice University study as saying that backyard barbeques are a "small but significant" source of air pollution.

In Los Angeles, the pollution from not only the burning coals (or wood), but also the "starter fluid" is a problem. The Los Angeles area Air Quality Management District (AQMD) passed a rule saying that the starter fluid had to be re-formulated to reduce emissions from evaporating starter fluid. A small amount of info on the health damage from particulates in general (not just those from BBQs and fire pits) is at http://www.aqmd.gov/rules/proposed/445/p...

Propane grills put out a lot less air pollution. One major advantage of propane grills is that you can turn them off when you're done cooking. Most BBQs continue smoldering for a long time after people have finished cooking.

Of course, you're still burning fossil fuel with a propane grill, but you're burning less of it, and you're emitting a lot less particulates and probably less carbon monoxide.

The propane grills do "wear out" or become unusably dirty over time. A friend of mine just replaced his grill, which I would guess has only been used a few dozen times. We haven't figured out yet whether we can recycle it somewhere, but I expect that unless we dismantle it and separate out the metal (which we can recycle), the old grill will almost certainly wind up in the landfill.
it s good for your soul.
Carcinogens are created when food is charred, whether on the BBQ or the frying pan, so it is best you minimize your intake of it. see the carcinogens in prepared food portion of the link below

Some would say it's not enough to kill you but for some it will be a cancer trigger and not much is all it takes.

Smoke from the BBQ/fire contributes to overall air pollution (again there are those that would argue) but as far as dangerous to the environment it's argueably not significant unless you start a wildfire.
I never use charcoal for the simple fact it has oil in it . May just as well take a quart of motor oil and dump it on your steak instead of A 1 sauce
Environmentally dangerous??Health Issue? You people are NUTS!!

The only health issue is a good issue with the fine taste of a rib-eye steak, baked potato, and fresh shucked corn all cooked on a CHARCOAL grill, or pit...Then I let the coals just KEEP ON BURNING BABY,and later on at night let the kids roast marshmallows and make smor's on em..I would LOVE to see any of you tree hugging nit wits try to stop me!

Damn, put the Al Gore stuff down and go out and try LIVING for a change!!
I think a better alternative would be to force every American to throw out their stoves and ovens and go cook in the great outdoors.

But that's just me. Wanna' use our federal tax dollars to fight about it?
Good Lord!! I'll NEVER give up my Webber - even though I live in Alaska, I grill all year...my Webber works great up to about -25!

And I burn wood for heat. Does it pollute? Sure - but at least it's a renewable resource *and* we go get it ourselves. I try very hard to be self-reliant.

As to health issues, cars are extremely dangerous - are you going to never ride in a car again? Life is fatal, you know...
The solution is for you to stop using your electricity and stop driving your car, and don't buy anything plastic. That way you will offset me using my BBQ grill.
