Is it true that cellphones are killing off bees?
Answer:
It's a theory, but apparently researchers give it some merit.
"Honey bee populations have suddenly begun to decline, and some British researchers think the proliferation of cell phones is a contributing cause.
A limited study at Landau University has found that bees will abandon their hives when cell phones are turned on and placed next to them.
What is known is that there are suddenly fewer bees to pollinate plants. In case after case bee keepers in the U.S. and Europe have reported something called Colony Collapse Disorder. In CCD, a hive's inhabitants desert the colony, leaving only queens and eggs.
CCD reports escalated sharply last fall, with bee populations falling as much as 60 percent on the West Coast and 70 percent on the East Coast. Not only does that impact honey production, it also poses a threat to food production, since bees are needed to pollinate plants.
While mass-produced crops like wheat and corn are pollinated by wind, some 90 cultivated flowering crops rely mostly on honeybees. According to a Cornell University study, honeybees pollinate every third bite of food ingested by Americans, and help generate some $14 billion in produce.
"Are honey bees the canary in the coal mine?" asks Jerry Hayes, an official with the Florida Department of Agriculture. "What are honey bees trying to tell us that we humans should be paying more attention to?"
While the cell phone theory might seem far fetched, the British study isn't the first to suggest that man's technology might be short circuiting bees' navigation systems. German researchers have show that bees' behavior is different near power lines.
A few scientists also think the introduction of genetically modified crops could also be linked to the sudden disappearance of the honey bee."
Landlines are apparently safer where bees are concerned, and since we rely on them for pollination, this bears further study, don't you agree?
BUZZZZzzzzzzzz..
accually yes
Absolutely, its just as how electric bulbs are killing off flies. They fly near a light source and get their compound eyes dazzled with more information than they could handle. It's an complete tragedy
It is probably too early to tell if this is true or not. Despite recent findings, cell phones have been in use for a while. And although we use them more now than a few years ago, you would think that there would have been speculation about this earlier on.
When I first heard this theory I thought it was the silliest, stupidest pseudo-science of the year.
Well, I still think so, but here is what is a more promising lead on what the problem might be:

No. Cellphones operate on frequencies as low as 22 times the frequency that can harm a bee, but sometimes frequencis even 10 times that, making ti very unlikely that a cell phone could affect a bee.
a bee could be affected by frequencies as high as 50,000 hertz, cell phones would be more like 1,200,000-12,000,000.
False. its a myth. Studies have shown bees are exposed to a new type of pesticide that messes up their little brains and they cannont navigate properly.
It has nothing to do with cell phones or lightbulbs
It is just a theory. No one can know for sure until further research is done. You see bee wings move up and down 11,400 times every minute. So maybe some are dying from beeing so tired. I believe the the theory is true. You see, what is most likely happening is the bee are trying to listen for the sounds of there hive.(Which we can't hear) But cell phone waves interfere with the noise of there hive and they can't find their way back, which causes them to die.
NO, if it were try for me there would be no more bees
I don't think it's the cell phones killing off the honey bees. The climate has become very abstract all over the world. This is affecting all phases of life. Bees need to get their nectar from certain plants and flowers by pollinating them. Because of the abstract weather, the bees have not come out of hibernation on time to pollinate plants at the right time. They are not getting complete nectar. As a result, their antibodies break down and the bees begin to die. It is the same with humans. Look at what happened to the California crops that were affected by cold weather and snow in southern California early this year and late last year. This is only a theory, but more studies have to be made.
Not according to Ecogeek. But they do cause tumors
While it's true bees are dying off, it hasn't been determined why. Most scientist think it's from either pollution or global warming. The scary thing is that bees not being around will lead to many problems. Einstein once said that after the bees disappear, humans will have only 4 years left.
wel we deffiently need to cut off with cell phone useage because out sytem relys on bees for fruits and vgtables to meat because beers polinate alfalfa *(what aminals eat)
must be true my 400acre orchard is short of bees this yr and fruiting is less, this may be a disaster
It's called colany collapse sydrome, it has already been proven that high levels of EMF forces disorientate bee's.
This is why the theory of mobiles are causing the colany collapse syndrome.
It is a mystery of where they go and why they are dying until then it is seriously affecting farmers.
How would you feel if you went to look and your cattle had just run off and no-one knows where they went or how or why.
Same thing but with bee farmers are suffering tremendous losses.
I wouldnt be suprised if the insurance company's are calling it an act of god and refusing to pay up in some cases.
Also bee's are very intellegent creatures in some ways, they do dances to tell the other bees of the exact gradiant and distance the pollen is.
Either way bee's are different to humans and may not have such thick skulls to withstand the radiation
I would say yes to landlines being safer. Cell phones have been linked to acoustic neuromas and brain cancer so I'm sure they are not that healthy for the environment.
People make jokes about the bees dying but if they do die where will pollination come from for the trees, plants, etc. No plants, no human life eventually. Will they be laughing then? Oh wait a minute, probably they will because they are ignorant anyway and feel it won't happen in their lifetime so why would they care.
If we are going to try the corn/gas, we will need lots of farmers growing corn. Crops need bees.
It is a theory that could possibly be true.
The signals are throwing bees off course when they migrate. Thus, bees cannot make it to their mating grounds or to where they usually find food sources.
BUT it is just a theory, and has not yet been proven by a long term study. Bees dying may be due to global warming or something else.
Who knows? The cellphone industry would never accept that idea.
I was thinking it might be something like gluttony. Maybe they are getting diabetes or something like that. If you think about bees and the environment they live in, you'll see that their lives are quite easy compared to in the past. There are giant fields full of flowers which they can easily get the pollen from without much effort. This is nothing like their natural world. You don't find endless fields of flowers all over the place. Most bees don't have to fly as far nowadays. Could this lack of exercise be affecting their bodies? It seems to have a major affect on humans. Just an idea.
