I have read that they are endangered because of the improvements (dams and channeling) done on the countries large rivers, like the missouri and mississippi. This eliminates their breeding areas and prevents them from reproducing.
I'm not seeing anything related to the environment, unless you include the overharvesting of the fish. See website below.
