How do you dispose of Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs?

Is there a hazardous disposal fee to dispose of them?
Ahhh yes, one more source of income for the Prophet Al Gore.

Answer:
There are several "free" disposal sites. The price of the bulb allegedly has the cost of proper disposal factored in. Nothing is "free". Ya'll didn't think that recycling elves magically removed the CFLs from existence from the goodness of their hearts? (Not when making cookies and crackers is so profitable!)

But, greed being what it is, you can bet the manufacturers are more than happy enough that most people will end up tossing their CFLs in the trash. Less work/higher profits.

What urban legend? Did you READ the snopes entry?
True and true in regards to mercury content and the need to avoid breakage (proper disposal). It deemed false the grave risk of ONE bulb or the need for Hazmat removal of ONE bulb (although it verifies the truth of the anecdote where the woman was charged $2000 for the cleanup of one bulb - snopes simply says they didn't NEED to call in a Hazmat team).

But we're not talking about ONE bulb, are we? We're talking about a massive consumer shift towards CFLs. We can't get people to properly dispose of non-toxic trash, do you really think that the lightbulb - oops, the CFL will go off above everyone's heads and they will instantly know proper disposal techniques. We've been using batteries and motor oil for many more decades, and we're nowhere close to proper disposal.
hide them in the tires that were used to decorate the stages yesterday, that way they will surely end up in a landfill somewhere!
What's YOUR contribution to reducing fuel consumption and pollution, Einstein?

Many municipalities have had free recycling programs for fluorescents of all types for a long time. Regular fluorescent bulbs contain 2-10 times as much mercury as compact fluorescents. Funny how no one ever worried about those. Other municipalities simply recommend that you put them in the usual trash.
They can't be recycled due to the mercury in them, they are just land fill.

So I guess you just put them in the normal garbage to fill up our landfill sites. At least the old bulbs are recyclable.
I throw them in the trash.
I just throw them away in the trash. By the way they seem to only last as long as two regular light bulbs.
Throw them in the trash.
