Recycling and renewable energy?

I just recently had a colonoscopy...the preperation tastes foul...anyway, part of the preperation was 4 tablets each one smaller than the head of an eraser. The cardboard packaging they were in measured 4"x6", why? A walk around your local supermarket further highlights the problems that we have as a wasteful culture. Why do we have to pack cornflakes in a bag and then package it in a box, for the end user to take out the cornflakes from the bag and the box and put them into some type of plastic container. Wasteful, the "packaging" if we are green, goes to a recycling center and if we are not goes into the trash for the landfill where it sits and rots and leaks gas and seeps down into the water table. We, you and I, don't need the packaging, it is just marketing hype, what they advertise on the box they can print on the bag. All of the supermarkets have a cardboard compactor, as a first step lets leave our excess packaging at the supermarket so that they can get rid of it!

Answer:
That's all they use cardboard for is to make it pretty so it costs more and so it appeals to kids. You have very good opinion on it. I would rather recycle it myself because the box protects the cereal bag itself.
Packaging sometimes serves a purpose beyond just advertising. It can help to protect the good while it is being shipped, resulting in lower shipping and handling costs. Shipping, storing, and stocking (on the shelves) boxes of cereal may be less costly than doing the same for bags of cereal. Oftentimes, when recycling is discussed, the focus is myopically placed on the recyclable resource, without regard to other resources. So, for example, if you recycle at home you spend time sorting out your recyclable material; the recycling company uses resources (labor, vehicle, etc.) in collecting the material, and the MRP (material recovery facility) will use resources in sorting and baling the material. This comes back to your suggestion to allow easy recycling closer to the source, such as the store. The store would need to set aside and area for this purpose, have people sort out the good from the junk, bale it, etc. It then comes down to what is the lowest cost -- or most cost-effective -- way to recycle and, indeed, whether the resources saved are worth the resources expended in the process. We shouldn't adopt a philosophy of "recycle at any cost", nor should we adopt a policy of "reduce at any cost". We should look towards using our resources in a manner that is efficient.

As for the packaging for your tablets, maybe that's so people don't slip a few in their pockets for those "home colonoscopies" that all the rage. ;-)
You are right. We do use a lot of wasteful packaging. A great tip for everyone is to buy in bulk. You get more product, and less packaging. The idea behind the cereal boxes with bags, if it's not in something air tight, it will turn stale or get bugs. And no one wants bugs in their cereal. But if we have to use bags, why don't we just get rid of the box, like the Malt O Meal cereals. You can also buy products that are packaged in recycled content.
There are usually some choices that use reduced packaging; not nearly enough though. If companies received a lot of complaints and sales began to go down, I'm sure we would see an improvement.
Try it, by the time you get home the cornflakes will be crushed almost to a powder but that wont matter as the bag will have burst. It really needs a rigid pack that stacks easily in the lorry or in the shop and protects the contents. The other alternative that has been tried is large bulk bins, you weigh out what you want and put into a container to take home, if you used plastic containers that you used repeatedly, that MIGHT be a viable option. More acceptable might be a waxed cardboard completely recyclable box that keeps atmosphere out as well as that inner bag does but gives the rigidity and ease of handling/transportation afforded by the cardboard outer box used at the moment
Packaging is good for marketing. I know there shouldn't be that much wasteful packaging. I think if the product was organic or eco-friendly, it should be packaged in some sort of recycled material...There are still a lot of companies that do not care about the environment and are just all about the bottom line...how much they profit? will it sell? etc. The government needs to get involved and make recycling mandatory and limit wasteful packaging!
