Are sites that are registered on Department of Environment and Climate Change classified as National Heriage?
Answer:
It would probably be more helpful if someone just answered the question instead of copying and pasting unrelated junk in response.
Sites that are registered on the Dept. of Environ. & Climate change are NOT NECESSARILY National Heritage sites. National Heritage sites are selected for historical value only, and have no relation to environmental issues.
Hi, just adding a response to the next post. I included the information so they could look at the braoder picture, but it does specify that only some sites are National Heritage sights. The supershort answer would be:
Some are.
I just thought I'd give a fuller answer as "some are" can leave people hanging.
Back to our regularly scheduled broadcast: Throughout the world, national ICOMOS committees work to support the World Heritage Convention. In the United States, the NPS serves as chief steward of the nation's natural and cultural patrimony. The Secretary of the Interior, through the National Park Service, is responsible for identifying and nominating U.S. sites to the list. The Service's Office of International Affairs provides staff support for U.S. participation in the World Heritage Convention.
a map of the United States and a link to the map page There are twenty (20) World Heritage sites in the United States (including two sites jointly administered with Canada). The U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the Federal Interagency Panel for World Heritage has identified many more sites (cultural and natural) as likely to meet the criteria for future nomination to the World Heritage List. This tentative list is available for viewing.
he U.S. Tentative List (Complete Text)
Note: Complete text downloaded from US/ICOMOS gopher site.
Under the terms of the World Heritage Convention, each signatory nation is asked to submit to the World Heritage Committee a tentative list of properties, which it intends to nominate for inscription to the World Heritage List during the following five to ten years. This tentative list constitutes the "Inventory" (provided for in Article 11 of the Convention) of the cultural and natural properties situated within the territory of each Sate Party and which is considers suitable for inclusion in the World Heritage List. The purpose of these tentative lists is to enable the Committee to evaluate within the widest possible context the "outstanding universal value" of each property nominated to the List.
