Internal combustion engines, e.g. the Otto-cycle engine used in most cars, can burn a variety of fuels. Gasoline works, but so does propane or hydrogen. It's comparatively easy to change fuels on an existing engine, or, better, design an engine to run best on a specific fuel such as hydrogen (H2).
Why H2? It burns cleanly, with no carbon dioxide emission and other pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, are easily controlled. Why not H2? Because hydrogen must be produced; it is not naturally occurring in large quantities, unlike propane. The process of making H2 from water uses energy, often from a fossil fuel such as coal.
Another problem with H2 is storage. Since not much mass fits in a tank, a car won't go far.

A hydrogen car is a sad excuse for alternative energy, especially considering that there were electric cars in the USA not too long ago. The hydrogen car costs about $100,000 and the fuel is so expensive.

Hydrogen can also be produced from water (water = 2 molocules of hydrogen bonded to 1 molocule of oxygen. H2O) Some scientists are working on an engine that will use water as fuel, produce the hydrogen needed to fuel the engine, and release only oxygen back into the environment.
The main problem with hydrogen cars right now is that virtually no gas stations sell hydrogen tanks so you can't fill up anywhere.
