I thought biodiesel came from soybeans and other seeds/ nuts/ legumes. Just filter restaurant grease.
Diesel made from coal isn't biodiesel. It's just synthetic. That's the only reason you would use methanol and caustic soda.
If the question is how else can you personally make bio-diesel the answer is probably "there is no other way". But, if you are asking if there are alternative processes to transesterification then the answer is yes, there is an alternative.
