Why are birds chirping at 1AM?
Answer:
Mockingbirds are notorious night singers. It is breeding season now.. so birds are territorial and sing more than usual. I would think your AC would drown out their song. If you decide to open the window..I suggest a good pair of ear plugs.
Do what I did and ask them instead of asking strangers in Yahoo questions. I had the same problem so I asked the father of the large robin family near our house. He told me he was so disapponted in all the human environmentalists trying to kill off his human friends that his family chirps (cries) endlessly day and night.
I feel for you. I'm sitting here listening to one signing like Pavarotti right now, and it's after midnight here in the south USA. I sometimes get up well before dawn, and I hear them then too. Thank goodness for ACs and white noise machines.
I'm not sure what kind of bird it is, but I think nightingales sing as night, as well as some other species. It must just be due to the time of year...
One of the things I have heard is that this is a results of the intense lighting in our cities. The street lights have some how convinced the birds that it is day time.
I live in area with no street lights and those darned birdies are not singing until the rooster crows.
Yeah, their mockingbirds. They are the most annoying of all birds. They will even imitate car alarms too. Be glad there's life in your neighborhood. TO enjoy living out of the city, you need to put up with bird dropping on your car, baying Coyotes, the smell of a skunk, and that squirrel that stole your peach.
edit:
That's strange, I live in Los Angeles and I have more wild animal problems than You. Perhaps putting up fake owls around your house might scare them off. They rarely work, but who knows.
Yes it is a stupid mockingbird, sometimes they act like they're on crack and sing for several days and nights, if you want to get rid of it buy a fake owl and put it near its favorite hang out, I promise it will find somewhere else to go.
Simply put, because it's quite then. The noise levels in cities, at daytime, is forcing them to resort to earlier habits.
Hmm, I just saw your additional notes. I can't say why they would do this outside of populated areas, but it is a known phenomena inside cities.
