You could start a compost pile in your back yard. Many table scraps can be throw in there instead of the trash (don't throw protein or fats or onion/garlic though... worms don't like that...)
sign up for the new FunQA.coms, and it helps you win green taxis for your town! also, when you go to the store, bring your own tote, and bike where you can. you dont have to go to extremes to go green, little things like buying recycled paper products will help too!
Fluorecent light emits as much ultraviolet rays as the sunlight and we all know the ultraviolet rays damage the skin, darken freckles, cause age spots, and can increase the risk of skin cancer. I know it because my dermatogist told me not to use fluorecent light bulbs because of my freckles. Be sure you know what you're getting into. What's the benefit if you're exposing yourself and you family to ultraviolet rays. Don't believe me: I'm going to ask you exactly what my dermatologist asked me: Have you noticed what kind of light bulbs the tanning beds use???
You can Get Clean! Have you ever heard of the company Shaklee? They have cleaning products that are safe for you, your home and your planet! If you purchase the Get Clean starter kit, you will eliminate 108 pounds of packaging waste and 248 pounds of greenhouse gas. These products were featured on Oprah last month. If you would like to see a clip of the show you can go to http://www.shaklee.net/pws/library/flash...
These products are wonderful and I will never use anything else! Especially since I know I am helping the environment and my family! Please go to www.shaklee.net/barbaramangane... if you are interested or contact me!
Put up a clothesline in your backyard! There is nothing more meditative and soothing than hanging out clean laundry on a beautiful day, and you save lots of energy. And your clothes/sheets/towels smell so fresh! I also think my clothes last longer when I don't dry them in the dryer--even in the winter, I hang dry most of my clothes on a wooden rack.
You could replace the hazardous cleaners in your home with eco-friendly ones. Most people have no clue what is used in their everyday household products because the manufacturers do not have to list their ingredients on the label. Lysol contains insecticides. Johnson's baby shampoo contains formaldehyde. Dishwasher detergents are the lead cause of accidental poisonings in children.
If you have the money, instead of getting solar panels you can switch to a green energy retailer. They put the same amount of power you use into the grid from green sources, and offsets all of your house's use, which means no carbon footprint for your house. In my area this company does it http://www.bullfrogpower.com/
One good suggestion if you're going to build onto your house, have a white roof if possible. A white roof will reflect sunlight, so your house won't heat up as much. If I remember right they're doing this in Philadelphia, but it may be another city, but they're doing it to save power.
The ultimate is to have a green roof, where the roof is made to allow for plants to live on it. Then they'll absorb and reflect the light, and your house will remain cool.
If you are just starting off moving towards a more "green" lifestyle, there are so many little changes that you can make that can really add up and will not really inconvenience you too bad while you are kind of "transitioning".
Switch to cloth napkins. They don't need to be discarded (and most napkins are usually not recyclable), they are "classy" and nice to use, and you can pretty much throw them into the laundry with an already full load and not make a difference. Save money and create less waste!
Bike whenever you can! Short trips can easily be accomplished by biking around/walking instead of hopping in the car! I actually have been selling all my cars as I bought a new trike and ride my mountain bike everywhere, practically.
When driving, consolidate trips to reduce fuel usage, keep tires inflated, and your car in tune. These will all save fuel.
Avoid buying packages that have individual servings prepackaged. These use a lot more packaging material. Bulk packaging really minimizes on waste.
Cleaner greener cleaning products/detergents such as from Seventh Generation are easier on the environment (and not extraordinarily hard on your pocketbook).
These are at least a few easier steps on your way to building green and moving in that direction! I applaud your effort!
You can puchase non-toxic,environmentally friendly cleaning products that are so concentrated that 108 pounds of packaging waste from goin in to the landfills. Plus these products save you money!

Hello!
Start simple. Recycle...everything you can! Take your own bag to the store, its fun. Walk to the store, you will purchase more efficiently. Purchase locally. Purchase fresh produce instead of frozen (some packages, esp. meat are unrecyclable). Purchase products such as grains pasta etc that you can use your own containers. Solar panels are good, so is wind power (wind mills).
Just Jeff
My biggest concern is materials, especially building materials, that have to be dug out of the ground. The mining does terrible damage to our beautiful planet. I don't like to see the massive use of concrete. Also think about this. When a house is eventually torn down, what has to be done with the material? Landfill? Not in MY backyard <g>.
So instead of concrete, stucco, etc., we could build adobe houses out of soil and straw bricks which eventually would melt back into the ground. But the people who issue building permits insist on adding something, such as cement, to make the bricks stronger.
The best way to help the planet, I think, is to simply not consume so much. We don't need huge houses. We don't need to constantly be buying new 'stuff'. We don't need to be using our cars all the time, trips every day off, etc.
Good luck!
i do not knoe want you are saying at all but want every it is i will tall you want i thinke about it ok>:)
