It really doesn't make any environmetal impact if you switch to appliances ect. that use less electricity. It does help your own bill. Power plants always produce more electricity than is actually needed. They do this so that when you turn on your air conditioner you don't cause all the lights in your house to dim. They have no way to predict exactly how much power they will need at any one time.
If you really want to make a difference in the environment protest the construction of coal burning power plants. Promote greener energies like Wind, solar, and nuclear.
The above answer is factually incorrect, dangerously so. Power plants continuously measure how much power is being asked for and only produce that amount. Yes, it's impressive technology, but it's been around for a looong time. Conserving energy works.

Carbon credits make little sense for individuals. They are basically a way to decide where industry can reduce greenhouse gases the cheapest way. For individuals to purchase them is just a feel good thing.
