If I walk through long grass in the summer(if we have one) how much chance is there that there will be adders?

I take my dog through this field that's very overgrown, but he looks leaping over all the long grass. Then one day my husband mentioned there may be adders, and I flew out of that field and my feet hardly touched the ground. What chance is there that I would have come across one? YUK!

Answer:
Depends on where you live, If your very lucky you might see one on upland areas like Dartmoor and Exmoor. Adders don't hang about in long grass waiting to pounce on human prey they prefer smaller animals on more open terrain. In the million to one chance there might be a snake in the vicinity of your bouncing pooch it would be long gone before you got within 50 yards of it. Snakes are very shy creatures who avoid contact with humans. In 50 years of roaming all types of country side I have only ever seen one snake in the UK and that was a grass snake - not poisonous - sleeping in a ditch in Somerset about 40 years ago and I was down in the ditch looking for it. I did see some baby adders swimming in a lake in France once the same lake had a beach from which lots of families, including mine, were enjoying a jolly good swim. Stride out and enjoy your walks you have more chance of winning the lottery than encountering a skulking adder.
Since summers and adders could be the same thing you had better watch your step in the long grass.
Not sure but doesn't it depend on where you are?
Miniscule chance unless you go walking on places like Dartmoor, The Peak District or The Lake District. Then the chance increases to Very Slight.
Depends on where you are in the world; you didn't say. If you are in Africa, then I would say yes, there could be adders. In North America there could be Great Adders.
If you are in UK then there is every chance that there will be adders in the vicinity. However, they particularly like to sunbathe on a rock or in short scrubby grass, being cold blooded. They are very shy and in all my many years I have still never come across one in the wild - despite looking hard! They feel your footsteps through vibrations in the ground and move away before you can see them. So don't worry, keep on enjoying the walks through the long grass!
Adders will not hide in long grass waiting to pounce on you - if they hear you coming they will get out of the way. It is most unlikely that you will ever see an adder, so don't let that remote possibility spoil your walks with the dog.
If you are scared why not wear wellington boots to protect your lower legs .. don't know where you can get them for dogs though.
you should be ok adders tend to like place that have some damp areas near by ponds and lakes the chance youll see 1 is slim not imposable but slim sop dont worry to much
if you make lots of noise the adders will slither off, they are more scared of you.
Good question i would like to know the answer to this also.
Can i just say in all my life i have never known anyone or anything to be bitten by one. Although there must be recorded bites , i would say it is very rare.
I use to spend ma holidays at ma parent's place who have a big empty garden(whch is not taken care of).
It was a sunny day n i was sitting in the garden,i saw smthing under ma chair n.n it was moving,it was green in color. At that time i thought "hmmn grass cant move but yes it was a small ADDER !
From that day i came to know not to move blindly through these long grass.
Oooo, i'd say about a million to one. They are only in a few areas of England. If there were any in the grass you walk through they would slither away & hide, their venom is important to them, they are unlikley to use it against a passer by, they need it to incapasitate their food. So unless you go around looking for them & lifting piles of stones and stuff you will be safe.
If you live where I live on the Mekong Delta VN you stay out of the weeds and grass there are 40+ deadly snakes here.
Adders love to bask in the sun. You will find them on open heathland etc, not long grass. There might well be grass snakes as the name suggests but chances are they would hear you coming from a mile off and slither away. They would be more frightened of you!
It's not impossible, but your chances of encounter an Adder in overgrown grassland are possibly about the same as getting struck by lightening twice on your birthday. Now if you should happen to have had such an unfortunate experience with lightening, stay out of the fields because a stray adder is bound to get you. However if misfortune does not dog your every move, then enjoy your county walks with renewed confidence.

Adders are relativity common in great Britain but absent from Ireland. They generally prefer dry heathland, moorland or woodland rides but sometimes during the summer may occasionally choose wetter spots. Even in its preferred areas it is very seldom you would encounter an Adder as they are not fans of people and when they hear them approach will slip away unnoticed. Undisturbed grass fields are not a preferred habitat anyway, and ones frequented by ladies with boisterous dogs are as popular a home for adders as the veg section of the local supermarket.

Now should you do choose to go walking across heather moorland or heath on hot summer's days there the slight possibility you will see an adder. If you do see one, count yourself fortunate because I spend much of my time in such places and even when I deliberately look for them I seldom see one.
