What is the best material used for water absorbing or water containing material?

Maybe things such as towels or artificial grass. We are doing research on the best material that can contain or absorb water so as to not dry up easily and will not produce odour like the towel when they dry up and get wet again.

Old Hessian sacking smells sweet when it gets wet. Stays wet for a long time and will eventually return to the land without leaving a trace.
Silica crystals (gel) are the best I can think of. Because they are cheep and safe.. and they have no stink...
Micro porous cloths are fantastic moisture absorbant materials.
