Answer:
We have always been fortnightly collections. Green bin for recycling one week, the black for household waste the next and our glass bottles get collected every 4 weeks. I have 3 bunnies which generate alot of waste and we manage. If we can fit it in thn we do make a trip now and then to the tip. You'll be surprised when you start splitting everything down into each bin how much room you will have.
I've always had those where I lived so it seems normal to me. My city is actually looking into a animal waste recycle program that will recycle pet poo into methane gas...pretty nifty.
We recycle a lot of stuff, so the bin is quite handy. I did think at first that a collection every two weeks would fill the bins to overflowing, but because the majority of stuff is recycled, it worked out okay. The only problem I have is, that I can't remember which bin goes out! What I have to do is, put the bins side by side and the one nearest the road is the one to put out, then swap them after its emptied.
we have the same in n/ireland except our garden waste bin is green dunno if im jealous lol I do like brown its my favorite colour xx
Hi,im an ex pat living in Dortmund Germany and we have 5 different coloured bins 1 for this 1 for that.I just put the rubbish in the bin that is empty.
i would recycle much more if we had this system!
we only have black wheelie for house waste, collects every week but i don't put mine out very often because i don't put much in also green wheelie for plastics/tins/paper which i always fill that only gets emptied once a month which isn't enough ....we have to take glass/garden waste etc to recycling centre our selves...Leeds west Yorkshire...
we have to pay for garden waste bins sigh. we put our garden waste in a pile behind the shed to compost. we get our recycling collected every 2 wks. its always real full. we recycle loads. our regular waste bin is about 1/4 full every week mainly food waste. i think they are bringing in food waste boxes soon to reuse into methene clever
Had fortnightly collections for a couple of years or more. No problems for us - the wheelie is half empty after most 2 weeks intervals, so I share it with neighbours as many people do around here. Made it known that people can use our bin and recycling boxes if theirs are overflowing.
Recycling boxes - one paper and thin card, the other for glass, foil, certain plastics (1 & 2) and cans. They're collected weekly.
I have written on our wall calendar a large red "BIN", at fortnightly intervals so that I don't forget.
We've also installed a "Sinkerator" for which the Council give a generous handout (that deals with food waste - even egg shells), and had "Smart Energy" solar roof panels fitted for heating our hot water. Even with the weather over the past month, the water temperature is up to 60deg when we have our morning showers so haven't paid anything for hot water since having it installed.
Takes a while to get use to, but you will be amazed at how much does not go in to the normal bin, oh yes wash out your tins because if not you end up with loads and loads of maggots, even if your boxes have lids.
We currently have a normal (grey) bin that is for general rubbish and that is collected weekly, we have a green box for cans and glass bottles that is collected every fortnight (it's not enough - I already got 2 extra ones for that ( mainly cat food tins and milk cans) so I think changing that up to a wheelie might be a good idea. We get a blue bag for papers that is collected at the same time as the glass etc but I don't have newspapers so that usually doesn't get used.
We just recently got a brown bin for garden waste and that collection is fortnightly as well.
I take the cardboard and plastic drinks bottles to the tip every couple of weeks or so as they have the bins for them there.
Not looking forward to bi-weekly general waste collection - there are 6 of us living here and I don't know if it would last 2 weeks (it's not usually full now with all the recycling but 2 weeks ? )
We have had it for the past few years in out area, it is the best thing they ever did.
