Cheap CFLs?

Does anyone know of the "best" place to buy CFLs? I understand that there definitely has to be an initial investment in the product. I just have a ton of lightbulbs to replace in this house, so it would be good to get the best value.

Thanks!

Answer:
Most home improvement stores sell some (60 watt equivalent) for about $1.50 each. But you'll want to try one out first, different bulbs have different light quality. Many people prefer "warm white" or "soft white" to the harsher "daylight" or "natural". You may want to spend more to get the one you like.

EDIT: Using compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) actually reduces mercury pollution.

Fossil fuels contain mercury. Using incandescent bulbs causes more mercury to be emitted from power plants. More than the tiny amount (0.005 grams) that is in a CFL.

It's better if you dispose of old CFLs properly so that even the tiny amount of mercury is not released. But, no matter how they're disposed of, CFLs reduce mercury pollution.

If the mercury in these bulbs is so dangerous, what about old fashioned fluorescents? They have 2-10 times as much mercury and are much easier to break. Those need proper disposal more.

EDIT2 Mercury is what makes fluorescent bulbs work. The mercury atoms convert electricity into (mostly) ultraviolet light. A phosphor coating on the inside turns UV to visible. One reason mercury is used is that it makes an electrically conductive vapor, not a common thing to find.

CFLs for $1.50 ea? Wow, I wanna move to where you live. They cost a lot more here! The minimum price Ive seen at Home Depot, even for the little ones, is double the price you quote. And the medium CFL bulbs are running $5-6 ea
the dollar store. i have seen a lot of them lately.
There is no good place to buy CFL's. They contain mercury and should be outlawed immediately. Does it seem strangely ironic that the environmental lobby, well known for being of the opinion that there are just too many people on the planet, want everyone to have a house full of fragile glass tubes with toxic mercury inside?

THAT'S CRAP - Mercury builds up in your system over time. What happens when one breaks? I get to inhale it. But I guess that's ok because I'm just a human and there's just too many of those. What does it hurt if I die from mercury poisoning as long as the planet survives?
Kmart 6pk 60watt=13watt 10 bucks.

Home depot has the highest prices on them i have found, somwhere around $16 for 4 60watt=13 watt CFLs.

It appears Andy G doesn't have a clue what he is talking about, or is lobbying for the energy industry.
We got ours at Sam's for $12.99/8 pak.

They were the 60W eq.
I am not sure of the best place to buy them, but I wanted to let you know that Andy G. does not have a clue what he is talking about. If he is that useless to this world, then it would not matter if he was poisoned and the rest of the world lived on.
