How come people think greener living is just about using less gas?
Answer:
You ask two very good questions. Climate change is about much more than just how much gas we are using. However think about what things that you personally control directly. One of the biggest things an everyday person does that impacts the environment is burning gasoline in his or her car. If you calculate your own personal carbon foot print you are likely to find that your gasoline consumption is the single largest contributor. So that represents the biggest thing people can do personally to make a difference.
If you are interested in becoming knowledgeable about global warming, understand that it is a technically complex science. It is hard work intellectually to understand it, but it is also very interesting. I strongly recommend that you start with wikipedia (first link). The wiki pages are generally well written and accurate. Also they are full of good links to more authoritative sources of information. Another excellent source is RealClimate (second link). It is a site maintained by several actual climate scientists who are actively engaged in research. It is probably one of the most direct links to the most scientifically current and valid information sources available to a non-scientist. Highly recommended.
They think that because... thats where the media hype is.
Liberals are all about the hype... never about the reality.
I don't know, probably because thats what all of the car companies and media are covering. Right now stupid companies like Hummer are making cars that chug up our natural resoures!
Did you know that most trees aren't getting enough carbon dioxide? Also, trees hold in more heat than open land.
I completely agree with you, but the main issue for us right now is energy. Burning fossil fules is by far the most destructive thing humans are doing on a mas scale. So, using less gas and using less energy/electricity is the first thing that should be addressed.
Here are a few things to consider..
Less than 11% of the entire landmass of this planet is populated and developed by humans.
It's simple science, everything on the earth will remain on the earth forever (unless we shoot it out into space). It changes form, but never goes anywere.
There are more forest (trees in general) in the US than about 100 yrs ago (however, the wild fires are currently taking care of that).
Why can't humans use natural resources to our advantage, are we not also part of nature? Doesn't ever creature on the planet use nature to it's advantage?
Water vapor, which something we do not control, "pollutes" the air more so than anything man made.
