Solar and wind power are __ and safe forms of energy that are renewable and don't pollute?

Answer:
man made
alternative? I am suppose to fill in the blank right?
abundant
effiecient
Solar and wind power are (useful, efficient, alternate, abundant...) and safe forms of energy that are renewable and don't pollute.

There are a lot of things that could go in the blank because solar and wind power have a lot of advantages, as well as a few disadvantages. But, the advantages outnumber the disadvantages, so solar and wind power are very helpful. Also, you can't really "run out" of it.

Hi Priscilla,

If you want to get extra credit, the other two answers are what may be expected because wind power and solar power are both "abundant" and they are "alternative" sources of energy. "Abundant" may not be truly correct though; because, the wind ebbs and blows according to the locale and predominating weather conditions, most specifically, low pressure zones, and all it takes is a single cloud to reduce the efficiency of a solar electric panel down to 30%, and if its totally and darkly overcast, as little as 20% of the power that a solar panel is capable of producing may be all that it will give.

What is totally ignored with these two types of power however, is the manufacturing process used to create them in the first place! A single boule of solar cells, grown in a furnace, can use up immense amounts of energy. Even more is used to cut the boule into flat wafers, and more is used yet to polish each wafer to exacting specifications. Then, for every 3 boules produced, only one is suitable to cut solar cells from. Now what is used to produce the energy to produce each viable boule? Yep, you guessed it...fossil fuels, either diesel or coal.

So when you answer this question, force the teacher to tell the entire class the WHOLE truth...bring this up.

cheers!
Yes and no.

I like the idea of getting my electricity from using solar panels and one day the prices of the equipment may be low enough to use. But it takes energy to make solar panels, to transport them and to make the batteries and equipment into which the solar power is diverted. Over the lifetime of the panel, it may be cleaner, but don't think for a moment that there is zero pollution.

I also love wind power. But, again, the get wind power we must build windmills. Those little puppies use steel, copper and more -- all of which takes energy and impacts the environment to produce. Think open pit copper mine for example. Like solar, I think the tradeoff is probably a good one, but it is not zero pollution.

In my rural former hometown in Western NY State, there is a spirited fight going on over the construction of a wind farm. People object to having their views obstructed by windmills that tower over the top of hillsides. They worry that the windmills are noisy and might disturb them. They think ducks and geese will fly into the blades and be killed. At least some of those concerns are accurate, in whole or in part. But would we rather have a new coal fired plant instead? Apparently, the answer is Yes so long as it is in someone else's backyard.

The other issue with both wind and solar is that they are not "on" 24-hours a day in any one part of the world. Night comes, wind stops blowing and we still want to turn on our TV's. We either have to have the energy storeed in huge battery arrays or we will still need an electric grid that produces and ships energy the old fashioned way - from gas, nuclear, coal or hydro.

The costs of generating energy are economic and aesthetic as well as health-related.
CO2 free
I think the best word would be "clean" as they don't pollute or cause harmful effects.
expensive. hate to say it, but per light bulb they cost 10x as much as coal.
efficient
clean, alternative, effective, safe, useful, good for the people and the environment of this earth
natural
unreliable?
free?
weak?
