What is global warming?

Global Warming is going on right now because the Earth is slowing heating due to what many believe to be CO2 levels going up: the reason behind it is very skeptical: there are two sides 1)the side that blame humans for earth heating up with cars and what not 2) the idea that the Earth goes through natural cycles of highs and lows. Personally I believe the second but in the end you should make your own decision not have other people tell you what is the cause

when pollution traps pollutants in the atmosphere - like a bowl of soup with a cover on it.
if you are old enough you may notice you can't see thousands of stars in the sky anymore - they are still there only there is a haze blocking them - well that and light pollution - lights radiate heat and use coal to burn - the coal/gas and whatever forms a shield trapping pollutants in our atmosphere turning our planet into a toxic soup.

Some gases ("greenhouse gases") let sunlight in, which warms the Earth, and then block that heat from leaving. That's the "greenhouse effect", and it's a natural thing, mostly caused by water vapor.
Man is making excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly by burning fossil fuels. That causes the delicate natural balance to go out of whack and the Earth warms. That's global warming.
It won't be a Hollywood style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.
Most scientists say, in 20-50 years. But we need to start right now to fix it, fixing it will take even longer than that.
