Why don’t the British people respect the government’s view on Global Warming?

It appears to me that the more the government get behind the Global Warming debate the more cynical people become to the whole issue. I am a sceptic on the issue so I am actually pleased to see the reaction of the public. But, if as we are being told this is such an important problem and the government REALLY believe in it, shouldn’t the government be smarter? Maybe they should use the TAX system as an absolute last resort rather than first choice to solving any problem. Then their arguments may carry more weight and achieve more respect.

Personally I think that the government is not really serious about the issue and just see the new religion of Global Warming as a very convenient cash cow to milk us dry even more.

Answer:
Maybe if they took initiatives to tackle problems; invested in real solutions and cleaner renewable fuels - rather than just tax everything to death then we'd have more faith.. Grubbing more money do'es not make a crisis disappear.. Look at Iraq..
bingo!
Exactly mate, thats how a lot of us think,if you don't watch out they will try and tax you again too.
i dont respect the governments views on a lot of subjects however i do what i can for the environment regardless of whats being said. i want my children to have a future, just this morning i heard that land fill will be full in 9 years! i cant understand why some areas struggle with a fortnightly collection of waste whereas where i live its the norm and we dont have any problems with fly's, rats or maggots! if something isnt said by our government then where would we be now?
I am afraid the government has little option. Few people would really change their lifestyle enough to combat climate change without a financial incentive. The societal greed for money means you have to hit individuals in the pocket to make them change their behaviour. You only have to look at driving style to see that all cars would return a much better economy if drivers adopted a calm driving style but we continue to want faster acceleration, higher top speeds etc which all hit the economy of the car. Despite fuel prices forever going up, you just dont see drivers changing their inefficient driving style - you do see drivers infuriated at spped limits and controls, you do see drivers trying to dash through traffic as fast as they can, you see drivers braking hard at speed cameras and speed humps then accelerating away again. Thus the speed cameras and speed humps actually cause more pollution as well as angry drivers.
They could start by introducing legislation to encourage people to go more green.
My daughter is working in the Middle East at the moment and a house cannot be built there without solar panels on the roof for water heating.
Insinkerators could be another house-building requirement - I'm sure Yahoo contributors could think of many more.
if you were a politician what would you do to sell "hot " concepts?
I don't live in london
I do not know where you get your facts?
In a poll, 91% of the people in UK say that “climate change or global warming, due to the greenhouse effect” is a serious problem. I think the spreading the misconception of non-consensus is at heart of this topic.

Demeaning behaviour won't help you. It just further the ridicule your way of questioning attract. Would you care to show any of these sources, or are you content on making unfounded claims? Do you care to let us view your sources and examine their reputation or is this something you want to avoid?
i will respect the government , when the government respects me ,

never
It really is a hidden tax. When a business has to buy carbon credits, that expense gets passed along to the consumer and the money goes to someone else trying to do something green. Watch out for the coming inflation.
I think because British people are very savvy about everything no matter how uneducated they are. Brits seem to have an innate BS monitor, especially for what the government/EU tells us - also of course because our government has a long very bad track history for seriously BSing us in the past, so we've become justifiably suspicious of them.

Add this to the fact that more is coming out all the time to challenge the CO2 agenda, so people are thinking "hang on a minute", because some things are starting to look suspect to them - plus add in the patent insanity about carbon offsetting and carbon trading that allows the rich to continue their same old lifestyle - plus add that those telling us poor sods to cut back and pay green tax are the beggers who're living the high life - plus add that when we're told we're evil cos our house gives off 990 tons of CO2 p.a. none of us really knows what that means, or if that makes a jot of real difference to the atmosphere, and if you ask for an explanation your accuser can't properly explain it either - all adds up to why we don't believe the government.

Finally, we all see and know that unless China does something it's utterly pointless in the UK doing anything, cos China puts out in one DAY what the entire UK does in one YEAR. So I think most people in the UK just want our government to sod off r.e. carbon taxes, etc, and pressurising ordinary poor folk to cut back their lives until they see China starting to do something better.
I agree with “The CO2 Agenda is a LIE!”, above (great name BTW).

The fact is that the UK accounts for just 2 per cent of global emissions, and falling. Even if Britain stopped using energy altogether, global temperature by 2035 would be six thousandths of a degree C less than if we carried on as usual. Six thousandths of a degree! So that’s 0.006°C cooler. Wow! Where do I sign?

Let’s face facts, all this talk about using energy efficient light bulbs, and driving more fuel efficient cars, is an utter waste of time, because the effect of these measures will be tiny compared to the total amount of CO2 we produce.

What we need is not for us to cut down the amount of electricity we use; we need the power companies to change the way they create that power. If we were to move to nuclear power, for example, we wouldn’t need to change our light bulbs or turn our TVs off standby, because the electricity would no longer be a source of CO2. We could use as much as we like! Similarly, there’s little point in trying to cut CO2 emissions from cars; what we need is for the car manufacturers to come up with a viable electric car. Bingo! Problem solved.

The government shouldn’t be taxing the public, they should be taxing industry. For example, as the tax increased on non-electric cars, prices would go up, and people would stop buying. The car manufacturers would then be forced to produce viable electric cars, or go out of business. It can be done… http://www.teslamotors.com/index.php... … 130mph, 0-60 in about 4 seconds, 200 miles per charge. I’d buy one!
Global warming is a fact. But how can you tell if a politician is lying? His lips are moving.
Anders is right. Real polls that sample people scientifically consistently show that the majority of the British people believe global warming is real.

What has gotten publicity lately was an online "poll" where people could choose to vote on a website (or not). Obviously that poll applies only to people who chose to visit that website, and chose to vote, and the results are meaningless. More here:

global change is true. it has been going on for millions of years. nature is a huge unstoppable machine that will sort it self out.right now i believe the problem is over population. in1804 world population reached 1billion, in 1960 3 billion and in1999 6 billion. if you want to do your bit to help, keep your pecker in his place instead of hers
The attitude of the Governments appears to be, tax it till it goes away.
I know a lot of people, myself included, who believe that the Government are using "green policies" to raise revenue. Especially when we're not told where the money goes, how many millions has the Government raised from the tax on flights? How much of it has been put back into research for more fuel efficient engines or lighter materials to be used in manufacturing?
Because more and more people are realising Global Warming is a con trick being used to taxes us more and are getting fed up of it.
So many statistics thrown at us by the media and government agencies - so-called scientific reports etc have later been contradicted that the general public feel that they are being 'conned' most of the time. Here's a little thought -
The report about cows producing more greenhouse gases per cow than a 4x4 car is not so stupid as it seems. Before the car came into use, for hundreds of years before, there were millions of horses used by the general public, the army, farmers and so on, all with massive lungs breathing out carbon dioxide and belching and farting volumes of methane.
Unlike cars they couldn't be switched off!!
It would be interesting to calculate the billions of coal fires of the pre-war industries and homes and see how their emissions added to those of the horses and cattle compared to today's cars.
