Do you think making cows belch less will really save the planet?

TThis was a real story on CNN. Didn't anyone think that maybe they should put emphasis on fewer people eating animals and instead more grains so the cattle industry wouldn't be producing so many cows. And what about all the methane the people produce...stop blaming the poor cows.

Answer:
absoluely not, i cant believ that story was even on cnn. firstly i dont know how youd force cows to belch less but the whole story seems ridiculous to me.
omg that is so funny. You get a star for making me laugh.
I'm starting to think that scientist are loonies.
the amount of methane produced from cows, sheep, ect. is nothing compared to the amount of corbon dioxide we put in the air with our cars.
Lets just eliminate the methane from the entire animal kingdom shall we? Science and CNN may not be aware of this but I have it first hand that bears, goats, gnu's, lions and tigers, cats and dogs, caribou, moose and deer, pandas horses and sheep, not to mention people, all belch and fart. I am not inclined toward vegetarianism but I agree the poor cows are hard pressed to be the principle culprits. Science rarely agrees with itself so I am sure their are those in the field that think the idea is ridiculous.
Stop trying to micro manage everything that anyone does. If I want to eat beef, that's none of your business. If I ate beans instead, the effect would be the same. Most people have way too much time on their hands. Concentrate on your own life.
If they kill them and send me the meat I will eat it. That should stop the belching.
That is just one more example of Shallow Ecology, and utter stupidity ... which I would expect from CNN. I expect Mikey is going to sue them over the false statements they made about his movie Sicko. They must be in a race with FoxNews for worst network.
Well, I don't know about the planet, but it wouldn't hurt to try and return cattle to something approaching their native digestion. Compared to many wild grazing animals, cows put out a lot of methane. That might mean we are making the cow do a lot more work (their digestion is not as efficient). Improving their feed mixture to match up with the natural flora (microbes) of their digestive tract could mean happier (less gassy) and more productive (greater milk output and/or muscle mass) cows.

Even though we are using them as a food product that shouldn't mean we can't respect their value and make their lives better.
you cant stop the internal workings of cows
we must stop eating hamburgers ,
that is where the problem is ,
with the demand for beef.

And people invented cows in the first place .
we should have been farming deer and keep the forests intact.
The reason cow, and such, emissions aren't that important is that they are a part of a natural cycle that balances itself out. The CO2 released by this years cows comes from previous years cows. It's not the same CO2, but the same amount. The CO2 exerted by cows comes from their food. The plants extract CO2 from the atmosphere (previous years emissions). So, the same amount of CO2 gets re-absorbed, and then released every year. It doesn't effect GW. Oil comes from ancient organic matter, mostly vegetable, which has been taken out of this natural circulation. Their rapid re-introduction, together with deforestation, is proving to be to much for the natural 'sink holes' to absorb. Thus the atmospheric CO2 levels are rising. Hope this helps.
Actually stopping cows from belching will not reduce the amount of methane produced by cows.

The food that cows eat will be broken down to smaller molecules one way or another.

If you manage to stop cows from belching you have merely slowed down the decomposition of the food that the cow eats.

There is now more material to produce methane in the droppings from the cow.

The bacteria that break down the cow droppings will produce more methane.

The amount that the bacteria will prodiuce will offset any amount that you saved by stopping the cow from belching.
basically what is occuring, is they are trying to reduce the amount of methane a cow produces, because the amount of methane that is created, is directly related to digestion efficiency, and percent metabolization of food.
Studies have shown that under similar conditions as a cow's digestion process, in batch fermentation, that the more methane that is created, the less metabolization of substrate occurs(or occurs more slowly).
using a combination of probiotics, and diet alteration, a cow's digestion can be made more efficient, and not only reduces emssions, but conserves food, and puts more money into a farmer's pocket.
journalists are just trying to put their own little spin on the story, to make it appear more entertaining than it actually is.
Belching. I though we belch CO2. That won't help because that CO2 has to come out some way. Gas from the other end is more important. I think there are too many cheap stuff. $1 hamburgers just makes us eat too many burgers, and I know some of don't need the extra protein.
The excess CO2 that is responsible for global warming has an isotope signature that indicates it comes from fossil fuels, not from grass. This animal-gas issue is a pseduo-scientific distraction from the real problem, and is therefore propaganda.
Yeah and did you hear that humans who eat meat create more greenhouse gases than all the cars on the planet? So maybe instead of only caring so much about what fuel our vehicles run on, they should spend just as much time trying to get people to stop eating meat. But I guess they only care to do what is more conveinent for the government.

Look at it this way. If the US Government can get US auto makers to create more hybrid vehicles and to start creating hydrogen vehicles then that will do 3 things. It will boost the sales of US brand automobiles. It will lessen our dependence on foreign oil companies and more profits will go to US oil companies who will be making more money off of future fuels that they are creating. If they made everyone stop eating meat then all of those American companies would go out of business and it would strike a huge blow to the economy.

So all this shows is that they really don't give a crap about the environment. All they care about is using the situation to make more money.

Plus here are some did you knows:

Al Gore uses 65% more electricity than the average American.

Al Gore has not once mentioned eating meat as a cause of global warming even though all the experts see it as the biggest contributer.

Creating Eco-Friendly Ethanol uses up more fossil fuels than it does to make gasoline. So by using ethanol you are really doing worse to the environment.

Hydrogen and Air Compression powered cars are filled up with pumps or other machines that are powered by electricity. Filling up these cars takes nearly double the fossil fuels that it would take to fill your car with gasoline.

The only way that a human does not give off greenhouse gases is if they eat no meat or animal by products. The only way to be emissions free is to become vegan.
Do you suppose the 30 - 70,000,000 Buffalo that used to roam the plains of the USA caused global warming before the white man arrived?
Kill all the cows. Lets have a barbecue.
