Isn't it time to bring back Freon in order to save on electricity and pollute less?
Answer:
Nice point, original Freon, (R-12) would be way more efficient using new technology that R-132 or R-134 or whatever they have started using now.
To the one who posted to get a "heat pump" to replace the AC unit. A heat pump is an A/C unit running in reverse. You see in the summer it moves heat from inside the house to the outside and in the winter moves the heat from the outside to the inside.
We can't pick and choose which problem to solve when dealing with greenies. They will accept nothing less a perfect solution. That is why they don't support nuclear power unless you deal with the rare environmentalist that actually realizes we cannot get to their perfect environmental solution anytime in the near future, an intermediate solution must be considered.
CFC's (Freon's a brand name)destroy upper atmosphere ozone, a more immediate pollution threat than greenhouse gases. Starting loads on AC's with newer refrigerants are higher, but the efficiency is about the same. Why don't you invest in a heat pump system , much more efficient than refrigeration-based AC's? You'll pollute less, save electrical power thus creating fewer greenhouse gases, and enjoy a cooler house.
Two years ago there was a press conference to declare success on the restoration of the ozone layer. It was held as an example that if all countries cooperate we can save the environment. Last year the hole in the ozone turned up bigger than ever.
The theory that CFCs caused a hole in the ozone was/is very weak. But the environmentalist used the same scare tactics. If we do not ban CFCs or freon we would all die of skin cancer. Well since their theory is wrong, I think it is time we unban freon.
New ACs work fine. Try getting one that's good quality. The new ones use LESS electricty, not more.
I don't think so. Folks might want to say that the Freon ban didn't accomplish anything, or that their theories were wrong, but the actual mechanism of ozone destruction proposed has each CFC molecule being able to destroy multiple ozone molecules (acting as a catalyst) for about a century. Estimates are about a hundred thousand ozone molecules can be destroyed by each CFC over that century. That means the problem can get worse before it gets better. Volcanic aerosols enhance this effect.
It's kind of like a microbial disease, sometimes the treatment takes a while to appear to start working, you just have to be patient. Science may very well be in favor of this ozone depletion theory.
