Everyone seems to want to read gloom and doom in things supposed predicted by some ancient civilization. Gloom and doom, ancient prediction...a bunch of crock to sensationalize pseudo-science.
What the Mayans discovered (by skillful observation) was the precession of axis...the wobble the Earth goes through in a 26,000 year cycle.
Actually that is the end of their calendar. Nobody know what they thought would happen then.
No I do not think it will be global warming based.

They did, and I've also been told that the world will not actually end, but that they would come back and take anyone who wants to go with them. I doubt it will be because of global warming, it will end because of war - I fear and pray everyday World War III never happens. I do believe they will come back, I don't believe the world will end.
Global warming would need 100 more years at the rate we are going to actually kill us. But, its just really a random date, superstition if I may say, its a guess, not an estimate. And for all we know, they might've guessed way off.

then there are the meteors storms (armageddon) ,the gulf of Mexico is the result of one that would have made life exstinct for a while ,this would result in an other ice age because globe gets covered in dust for a few years,blocking out the sun.

the weather has giant storms like hurricanes ,tornados ,tidal waves ,earth quackes
a shift of the earth crust ,would change the position of the poles
under Anrarctica were found fosilized tropical plants indication the pole must have been in a different place then (the mainland atlantis is thought to be under it )
Apart from that , the biggest threat to any species of exstinction is ,when there are too little ,and when there are too many ,so overpopulation is also a threat
and the USA appears to be gunning for a global nuclear conflict .it is most likely that this will get us first ,looking at present politics
the planet will probably survive unless humanities bombs result it to be knocked out of its orbit
so many ends to choose from
if it wasnt so serious it would be rediculous
meanwhile enjoy life .and make the most of it at least we are all in the same boat

Holy cow! How can anyone give Michael N's answer a thumbs down? What is this? Suppression of intelligence? We certainly want to keep THAT out of the global warming debate.
