What can I do with all my old clothes? I want to recycle where possible.?

Having spent the weekend having a sort out of a few things, I now find myself with a few clothes that I know I will never wear again. I'm all for taking them to the charity shop but wondered if there was anything I could do with them around the house first.

We're just talking about a few old t-shirts, shirts, pair of jeans, that sort of thing.

So, any ideas from anyone?

Answer:
Garage sale
Good Will/ Salvation Army
Abused women's shelter
Drop them off down town where the homeless live
Donate to a church
Local schools might use them for the kindergartners painting smocks
If you do any painting around the house why not use the old stuff so nothing good gets ruined..
You could use the old t shirts as dusters and cloths
Cut them up for cloths. Or if the T Shirts have cool pics on them, I once saw someone make really nice cushions...they cut the neck and arms off in a straght line, then they snipped the raw edges into a fringe on both sides, stuffed it and tied the fringy bits together...a no sew cushion.

Pair of jeans can be cut off for shorts...the extra denim kept for patches.
if you know a school, they'll ba happy to accept material and clothes for resources, if not take them to a clothes recycling bank, you could use them as "dirty" clothes if you have any messy household jobs to do, you could use them to garden in, or take them to a charity shop.
Bring them to good will, that's what I did, the money they make from it goes to charity :-) And if you have clothes that you don't think are worth anything, they recycle them into towels or washcloths. It is good for the environment and it helps for people.
If you're looking for crafty ideas that don't involve using them for cleaning, you can make small pillows or pillow cases out of old t-shirts, especially if they have designs on them. Even if they don't, it's still a soft covering. If you get enough clothes then you can cut them into patches and make small blankets out of them.
A non-crafty idea is to use them for stuffing scare crows in the fall, or donate it to a group who lets children make their own scare crows, that's always a fun thing.
But if you don't think you'll use the 9000 dust rags you can make out of Tshirts, then donate them to a shelter or Salvation army. Someone will get a good use out of them.
i use old clothes for cleaning and decorating if they are really past it. if they are wearable they go to the charity shop. cheers
well it goes without saying, you can't make curtains from an old t-shirt, but you can use t-shirts as dusters, or cut them into strips and use them for re-stuffing a pet's bed. However, by far the best and most rewarding way to use old clothes is to find the address of your local homeless shelter or battered womens' refuge and take the clothes there. You might also want to take some toothpaste, soap or pampering stuff.. it's a real feel-good thing to do and helps people most in need.
If they are still wearable, you could donate them. They also make great scrap quilts, so get out the scissors and start making some squares. If you crochet, you can make strips from them and crochet rag rugs.
The Salvation Army or Goodwill will gladly accept your clothes.
I use my old clothes to practice sewing techniques and designing ideas before I try it out on real fabric. I also like to use old clothes to design new things. Yesterday, I made a bedspread with old men's shirts and I have a few gaucho pants that I've made from old linen shirts and old suit jackets. If you are a crafter or artist, you might want to check out MotherEarthNews.com, ReadyMade Magazine or Altered Couture Magazine for some cool "deconstructed" clothing ideas. You might also want to google--softies sew--to get ideas on making and designing these really cute Japanese toys which you could keep, gift or donate to a children's hospital.
If there are any Goodwill Stores in your area, you could donate them there..or and abused women shelters would gladly accept them.
CUSION COVERS
installation for your house
give them to the children who don't have parents.
Tesco have clothes banks or you could give them to charity shop.
a good idea is that if they have places u went to or things u did on them, have your mom or someone u know whos a good sewer sew them 2gether and make a memory quilt. u can show your kids all the fun times u had and its just a good idea i think! im going 2 do that when i outgrow all my tshirts with camps and places i went, etc. hope i helped!!
Give them to Charity! =D
In our family, the only clothes that get donated are the ones that the kids have outgrown so that others can see some use out of them.

As far as our own clothes;
we turn old clothes into painting & yard work clothes,
jeans into quilts or patchwork pillows,
tee shirts into urban punk wear,
old shirts into cleaning rags, car washing rags, or animal bedding.
Keep a few unwanted clothes for doing the gardening with, painting, cleaning windows and furniture. It can always be washed and re-use again and it also saves money too.
I cut the sleeves off an old t-shirt at the weekend because there was a hole in it - I was going to use it for car windscreen rags etc but I found the sleeveless shirt now looks great for gym use!!
realcycle is a great place to start
you can offer them to people on there and recieve items you need too
i joined a few weeks ago and got rid of lots of bits that would have ended up in a land fill

here is the link to the london group
but i bet they have one near you

T-shirts and shirts can be used as dusters. Tights and socks (when washed) can be plaited into rugs.

Anything made from denim (jeans) I would give straight to Charity Shops.
Call the red cross, they will come pick them up at your house and give them to a homeless person (or a few depending upon home much you're giving.)
Thrift store. That's what I do.
I applaud your decision to reduce, reuse and reclycle first of all. Most any clothing item that is all cotton can be used as a cleaning cloth, especially T shirts, but unless they are very old I wouldn't cut them up. Have you thought about joining FreeCycle online, it started in Tucson and has reached many, many communities with over 3 million members now. Just go to www.freecycle.org and search for a group in your home town, or better yet start one if there isn't one out there. You can give away or gift almost anything, in fact its a rule of Freecycling. It's keeping all our stuff out of the landfills, you may find something you can use and best of all someone will get some use out of your old clothes, and they'll come pick them up.
Donate your unwanted clothes directly at your local Freecycle scheme http://uk.freecycle.org or take them along to the nearest charity shop. Find out your local charity shop at www.charityshops.org.uk. Read more about waste reduction at http://www.biggreenswitch.co.uk/waste_re...
When your clothes have reached the end of their wearable lifecycle you can do a number of things with them. Like you said yourself, charity shop is always a good one if the clothes are wearable to somebody. If they are worn out then you can use them round the house as cleaning rags, this is more cost effective to you means you are reducing your general consumption of stuff that would become rubbish! Rags are good for dusting, polishing the car, general stuff. If you've got other clothes you can take them to a clothing recycling bank, there should be one near a supermarket near you somewhere!
Call your local chapter of Vietnam Veterans . They pick up old clothes ; books; furniture ; tools , and just about anything - and it's for a great cause .
