What would be greener if you only had 2 choices, Wood heat, or oil.?

Answer:
My opinion is this..It truly depends on the combustion method. For example there are wood stoves that have internal secondary combustion systems that reburn the waste gases before emissions-I have one. There are also waste oil burners that can burn multi-source fuels such as tallow, glycerin, biodiesel etc-My manufacuturing plant has one.

The vendors are listed in the next category
wood because its polluting but at least i kno that its renewable.
Wood is a renewable resource but oil has more stored energy so you would burn less to heat your house than wood.

Trees consume CO2 and give off Oxygen, so growing them is good but cutting them down to use as a heat source is bad.

So I say use a geo-thermal heat pump and avoid either of the other two bad ideas.
it depends.
if you are willing to replace the trees you use, then wood.
why? because plants(trees) are carbon sinks. when you burn them, you are only releasing the CO2 they collected, and other trees will likewise absorbe it, given time.
oil from fossil fuels is actually relasing more CO2 into the atmosphere than was present already.

Plant sources of energy is actually recycling the greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. remember it isn't about how much greenhouse gases are in our atmosphere, but how much is present at one time.
burning fossil fuels increases the amount present at one time.

<<I cut only Dead, dying, or damaged trees or get them from a source that was going to trash them anyway.>>
good for you! keep up the good work. while you are at it it, cutting the diseased trees don't hurt either.
thats right wood is considered a renewable energy source if it is grown back...
The CO2 released into the atmosphere was sequestered by the treee during it's lifetime and if there has been another to replace it, it gives you a renewable energy source.
Plus i like log fires they are cool.
Also decomposing trees give off CO2 as well so if it is dead may as well burn it.
Nuclear [or nucular according to '43']. No hydrocarbons at all.

Back in the 1960's there were bumper stickers with 'Split wood, not atoms' on them. Not very green when you come to think of it.
I would build homemade solar heaters out of recycled materials
wood
Price out natural gas for heating, see if it's an option for you.

Otherwise, my guess is the wood. See if you can install a type of filter on the chimney.

However as well you can buy the logs made of coffee grounds or something, they're clean-burning if I remember right.

To get the most of it all though, make sure you have good insulation and no drafts, otherwise no matter what you use, your money is seeping out.
Both! Treehugger.com has a neat article about making fuel from oil derived from wood, read on..

"...researchers at UGA came up with a new chemical process that consists of first burning wood chips and pellets in the absence of oxygen at a high temperature, a process known as pyrolysis, and then condensing the gas that arises as a result of this initial step into a liquid bio-oil that is chemically treated."

wood
Insulate your place and get energy saving windows and doors and use an air tight wood stove.
