Global warming : ice caps melting?

people say that as the planet gets warmer and the ice caps melt that the sea level will rise, but surely if the ice caps melt then the pressure on the sea caused by the water in a frozen state will fall so the sea level will equal itself? and there will be no difference

Answer:
You're basically right, but it has more to do with displacement. Floating ice will not raise sea level if it melts. Polar ice on land mass is a different question. Those temperatures are well below freezing despite global rise in temperatures.

Scientist hypothesize that a North Pole free of ice will change the thermohaline conveyor and result in glacial advance similar to what happened during the Little Ice Age which ended some 150 years ago.
no because the ice caps are above the water.they are melting into the water. The sea levels have already risen.
Interesting theory but unfortunately not the case because pressure does not equal mass.
dunno im a doctor not a scientist
Hmmmm another flaw in this global warming farce, remember acid rain in the eighties! I wonder what will be next to extort money out of the expecting?
thats just what Al Gore wants us to think

Him and his crazy theories

lol
Example: Fill a glass to the rim with ice water. The glass will not overflow when the ice melts.
Excuse me ignorance, but what could have made the last Ice Age melt, we had no aircraft, factories or cars around then. If it was caused when the meteor hit, then surely all the global vegetation that got incinerated would have produced enough C02 to fry the Ozone there and then. I certainly try to do my bit as far as reducing my footprint, but I'm not convinced just yet....and anyway until the whole world joins in what difference can I make alone.
we wish, Dan O.
either way it confirms mankind is trashing this planet.
humans are the main cause of Global Warming, but listen to the sceptics on here, with their heads in the sand & too busy living in cloud-cuckoo land to notice!
adverse weather conditions & all the mayhem that they cause will shortly follow.
No, the volume of water in the sea will increase as the ice above the surface will become part of the sea as well as the ice beneath the surface.
Your question applies to water ice that is floating on the surface of the ocean, not to ice that is on land.

There is enough ice on land that if it were to melt, it would cause the sea level to rise.

Fortunately most coastal areas can be protected from flooding by dike systems similar to those in Holland that are used to hold back the sea.

Most scientists estimate that to stop or prevent Global Warming we would have to reduce carbon dioxide emissions world wide to less than one tenth of what they are today.

Unless we are willing to shut down our economies and return to a stone age hunter gatherer existence we cannot get enough reductions in carbon dioxide emissions to stop Global Warming.

We need to plan now how to mitigate the effects of Global Warming.

In addition to dike systems to protect caostal areas from flooding, we also need to upgrade our disaster preparedness and help poor countries upgrade their disaster preparedness for more and stronger hurricanes.

There will be more droughts. We need to help poor countries with supplemental water supplies and desalination plants.

We cannot prevent Global Warming, but we can mitigate the effects of Global Warming at reasonable cost if we start now.
thats true if the ice is already floating on water. however, the ice caps in antarctica, greenland and the glaciers on mountains are on land. when these continents of ice melt, all that fresh water could raise the sea levels a lot. also, as the oceans get warmer, the water density decreases causing more increase in sea level. A movie by Al Gore "An Inconvenient truth" tells the story beautifully.
global warming is junk-science...
like bird -flu, the birds got better.

The majority of the polar ice caps are not floating in water, and they are miles thick. The last chunk of ice that fell off the Antarctic Shelf was the size of Long Island. I don't think you understand the scale of what is happening.
sorry to say I'm one of the people that does not believe in so called Global warming.and its a simple answer...all the facts and figures are based on data collected from in the last 200-300 years if less than that..well the planet earth has been going for Millions of years so how can we say things are being caused my C02...when lots of gases have been let into the air over many thousands of years,,,but OH no its all happened in the last 40- 50 years..what TOSH>>>>we are being brain washed into believing what they think.and no other answer is correct...seems very similar to Islamic extremists...you either believe them or you are a sinner and must die..GO GET A LIFE LOOK AT ALL THE FACTS >>>CUT DOWN LESS TREES>>>>>AS THEY LOVE CO2.AND FUNNY THING IS GIVE OFF OXYGEN..so seems we are all doomed....TO MORE TAX RISES TO SAVE THE PLANET...
If i'm thinking along the same lines as you, then the mass of water released will be increased by a third.cos like any ice two thirds are already under water.
