The best scientists estimate that is will require that carbon dioxide emissions be reduced world wide to less than one tenth of what they are today if we are to have any hope of preventing Global Warming.
Many countries, such as The People's Republic of China will not go along with such a reduction in their countries.
In fact I had the opportunity to meet with a group of officials from The People's Republic of China this past week.
When one of the United States officicals brought up the need for The People's Republic of China to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions, the officials from The People's Republic of China were very offended and stated that they must increase their carbon dioxide emissions in order to keep their economy going.
The People's Republic of China alone has carbon dioxide emissions that are sufficiently large to cause Global Warming by themselves even if you were to cut the carbon dioxide emissions of all of the other countries on this planet to zero.
In the rest of the world the only way that we can get sufficient reductions in cabon dioxide emissions to stop Global Warming is to shut down our economies completely and return to a rather primitive hunter gatherer existence.
More recycling, buying hybrid cars, and buying cfls will not get you anywhere close to the reductions in carbon dioxide emissions that you need to stop Global Warming.
We must accept the fact that we cannot stop or Prevent Global Warming.
Instead we must plan now how we will mitigate the effects of Global Warming.
Blueberry and cranberry production will move farther north. The farmers will have to switch to other crops more suited to the new Climate.
The coasts can be protected with dike systems similar to those in Holland that are used to hold back the sea.
We will need to upgrade our disaster preparedness systems for more and stronger storms.
There will also be more droughts. We will need to help the affected areas with supplemental water supplies and desalination plants.
We cannot stop or prevent Global Warming and Climate Change, but we can mitigate the effects.
Another flood that cover every continent
I think it is a pretty sure thing, but do try to keep in mind that the global ecosystem is so complex that predicting outcomes is still a risky business. We talk as though we have a complete understanding of all the cycles and tipping points, but it is always the unknown that gets us.
I would like to see better funding of the science behind climate change. A better understanding can only help us.
