Why is everyone so afraid to use nuclear energy?

It is very affordable, plentiful, and as far as I know, good for the environment. Anyone with any thoughts on this? We probably will have to turn to this in the future.

Answer:
Not everyone is afraid of nuclear energy. It's the major source of electricity in France. The up side is that no greenhouse gases are produced. There are two down sides:
1. The question of nuclear waste has not really been satisfactorily solved. Burial is a possibility, but the burial site would have to be protected for the next 25,000 years or so until the waste is no longer toxic. This is a lot longer than any civilization has lasted so far. Another possibility is using the waste in fast breeder reactors, where yet more nuclear fuel would be produced. This technology is not yet fully developed.
2. Nuclear power plants could be attractive terrorist targets, so there would be security concerns.
because they are ignorant
It's unstable.big boom...uhh ohh we gone now
There are chances of meltdown and people don't want to risk I guess.

Anyways, if you're one of those people, you have nothing to worry about. The chances are extremely slim and if you die, you die. Everyone dies.

Also, they don't hire people like Homer!
Because of security risks and accidents and defects in design or construction, especially in the developing world, radiation and potential environmental damage that could happen from accidents in the storage of it's waste.
Ever see the many episodes of the Simpsons where Homer 'almost accidentally' melts down the city? Where does he work? Oh yeah, a nuclear energy plant. That's why I'm scared, at least.
can be dangerous, explosions can be unhealthy
Half of the US Navy's flotilla operates using nuclear propulsion systems.
Because it's a very small step from nuclear energy to nuclear weapons, at least in countries that don't have already have them. And, it's much more dangerous to work with. One mistake...ka-boom!
It truly is the best solution to our energy problems. It's actually safer than most other sources.

The Chernobyl thing got everyone scared, but the Russians could make a disaster out of anything.
Because if we used nuclear energy,

Then we wouldn't be using fossil fuel power plants.

Nuclear power would cut man made green house gas's 39%.

That would put all the global warming people out of business.

So, now you know why the global warming crowd, is against nuclear power.

They want us to keep using fossil fuel plants, so they can keep being funded.
It's time we stop being a country sniffling, crybabies and grab nuclear energy by the horns and apply it all over the country. We have the smarts to do it. Don't listen to the tree-huggers, same ones who are scared of new petroleum plants.
it produces a lot of waste
Most likely because humans are fallible. Therefore, humans+nuclear energy=potentially disasterous results. Why not solar, wind, or water instead?
The problem with nuclear energy is that we have to find a place to store the waste that will be stable for at least 10,000 years. Right now there isnt any place in the world to store nuclear waste permanently.
Three Mile Island (1979) and Chernobyl (1986).
Nuclear energy creates nuclear waste, which has a really, really long half-life, so you basically have a bunch of radioactive material on your hands, and nobody wants that in their backyard. Radiation is bad, and so the waste can be harmful. There is also always the chance of a meltdown, such as what occurred at Chernobyl and Three Mile Island. We can still see the effects of the disaster at Chernobyl (defects caused by radiation) and many people are not willing to take the risk of that happening again. So, I wouldn't exactly say it is good for the environment, although it doesn't create pollution per se.
Chernobyl and 3 Mile Island. Thousands of people dying of radiation poisoning isn't just a posibility; it's already happened. Nuclear technology has improved since 1986, and it may very well be a better option than the catastrophic potential of global warming. But no one has figured out yet what to do with the waste materials except to keep storing it SOMEWHERE - anywhere but my backyard! - and we must never forget the deadly cost of any human error.
I think your sick, nuclear power is one of the most evil things man has ever created. I live in Washington state and because of poor managment on the Hanford site people living on the columbia river will have a 100% cancer rate by 2050. Thats just one of MANY examples.
They are uninformed as to how safe modern plants and storage facilities are. Chernobyl could have been avoided, and even afterwards cleaned up far better than was done, which was mostly in the Ukraine, not Russia. Nuclear waste runs a risk, but a far smaller and more containable one as compared to non-point source greenhouse gases. Also, there aren't many people going around spreading the information that nuclear power is safe, I suppose because the misinformation won.
Hello? Ever heard of Chernobyl? I like the idea of nuclear energy...but some folks just can't be swayed. PLUS with all the new American security issues...it is probably even more dangerous than it used to be.
It needs to be...improved.
Fear, it drives everyone. It is far easier to be fearful of nuclear energy than to educate yourself on its benefits. Coal dumps unrestriced radioactive waste directly into the environment, but that doesnt matter.
The answer to questions: Laziness, ignorance, fear.
Nuclear energy is too hard to handle because there are thousands and thousands of terrorists out there wanting nuclear reactors to create into uranium bombs and nuclear bombs. This is the main reason why USA is trying to pressure Iran to dismantle the nuclear reactor because we fear that it could fall into the wrong hand.

Take North Korea, for example, they wanted to launch nuclear bombs toward freedom countries, such as United States and kill millions of people. Don't forget that North Korea is a dictatorship country, and they have 20 years ahead of us in technology, so they wouldn't even care about the rest of the world. President Bush says North Korea is part of the Axis of Evil, so we took every cautions to keep them at bay.

Another example is China. If China returns to totalitarian, we could be in a deep trouble because we are outnumbered by billions of people and we will lose a war if we mess with them.

That is why a lot of people are afraid of having any country doing nuclear energy because it could fall into the wrong hand.
