Those lightbulbs..?

ya know those lightbulbs they r talkin about that helps with global warming.. like whats wrong w/ the old lightbulbs?
im sry.. im not understanding y i shud change lightbulbs..

thx every1

Answer:
"We can save about 15 per cent on CO2 emissions, not by installing wind power, which a lot of people don't like, nor by using our cars less, but simply by developing gallium nitride-based lighting," Professor Humphreys said, the Goldsmiths' Professor of Materials Science at the University's Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy .

Gallium nitride is a compound that emits intense light.

Professor Humphreys believes the material that scientists are creating in the laboratory atom-by-atom could be the most important new electronic material since silicon.

He is convinced that using it in a light-emitting diode (LED), a device that emits visible light when an electric current passes through it, could help to curb global warming.

LEDs are already used in digital clocks, bicycle lights, mobile phones and traffic lights.

Unlike normal lightbulbs, which burn out quickly after about 1,000 hours, an LED lasts 100 times longer and fails gradually.
Put a power meter on a desk lamp. Try the old lightbulbs. Read the numbers. Try the new lightbulbs. Read the numbers.

Ding! The new lightbulbs use WAAAAY less power. Which means several things.

1. They need to generate less power to run the lightbulbs. Generating power makes pollution.

2. The new lightbulbs don't get nearly as warm. (you'd burn your hand on the old ones.) That means your house doesn't get as warm, which means you need less air conditioning, which means you need less power.

3. The new lightbulbs last a LOT longer. I have 11 lightbulbs in my house and in 3 years guess how many I've replaced? ONE.
The 'old' lightbulbs heat up really fast and heat the air around them really fast, this then rises or something but, anyway its not good!the new ones dont heat the air around them, One cfl bulb uses the same amount of energy as 4 ordinary bulbs, they also last for about a year!!think of how much money you will save!!:-p
Simply stated they are much more effiecent. They use less energy for similar light output, last longer than the "old" style, and operate at a cooler temperature.

The first 2 save $$$ and CO2 output. The last one is a safety issue.
The old light bulbs that are not environmentally friendly convert a lot of the electricity they use into heat energy, so only a small amount of the total energy the light bulb gives off is light energy. The new "energy saving" bulbs however convert more electrical energy into light energy and less into heat so less electricity is needed to get the same brightness of bulbs. The new bulbs take a minute or two to get to full brightness but they are much more friendly to mother nature!

Hope that helps and has not confused you:D
just give it a try. if you change all lightbulds to CFLs like I did, youll notice a drop in your energy bill. not kidding. AND they last a hell of a lot longer than the old school bulbs. I installed mine a year ago and havent had to replace one yet. I think theyre great

other things you can do to make that drop in your energy bill even more substantial:

do not leave the ceiling fans on! most people dont know that these things consume a lot of energy.

turn off or adjust you a/c to a higher setting when you leave you house for long periods of time.

use cold water when washing clothes. and avoid using the heat setting on your dishwasher. also consider washing and drying dishes yourself and hang drying most clothes.

buy/use more energy effecient home applicances like the refigirator. they have energy ratings for this kind of thing.

also, if you care at all about perserving the only enviornment you and we have to live in, then switch your energy to an alternative energy provider like solar or wind oppose to dirty coal. Most cities have this option and many people still do not know about it.
The new bulbs last longer, and use less electricity, and cause less pollution. If you replace all your bulbs you will see your electricity bill fall.

They also produce allot less heat.
The 'new' light bulbs everyone is talking about are highly efficient, environmentally friendly compact fluorescent bulbs. You can probably pick them up at your local supermarket or department store.

It's important to recycle the bulbs once they burn out, however, as they contain small amounts of mercury and can potentially harm the environmet if left in garbage dumps.
They save energy and money. It's not that the old lightbulbs are evil, it's that the new ones are better. By the way, you can get some using this link: http://better.yahoo.com/answers/...
See, better is in the name!
The ultimate goal here is to make the "old" bulbs illegal and force you to buy the "new" bulb, taking away your ability to choose. Also I can see "them" making it a crime to just throw the "new" bulb away when it's usefulness is done .. because of the Mercury content.

Oh and what about the price of this "new" bulb compared to the "old" bulb? That's why I predict you'll see the "old" bulbs say bye bye here sooner or later, leaving people without a choice. Because there is lots of money to be made with this "new" hysteria.

You know if they really want everyone to go "green" why don't they make it affordable? I can't help but get the feeling that someone is taking advantage of the situation. When I'm looking for a light bulb and I check prices on the shelf. I'm going to pick what's affordable. Oh look, a CFL for $4.00 and over here I see the "old reliable incandescent light bulbs ... a $1.10 with the tax and a 4 pack on top of that. Now which one do you think most people are going to choose?

Remember when I said there is going to be a lot of money made off all this? Well read the article .. what a joke ... all of this over a broken light bulb. http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/articl...

Oh and when I need a bright light .. I want it now .. not two or three minutes from now. I'll stick with my "old" incandescent light bulbs ... that's while they are still legal.
The old lightbulbs waste power, a lot of power. The CFLs use less power and last WAAAAAAY longer.

They last so long in fact, that they more than pay for themselves.

If you replace an old lightbulb with a CFL lightbulb the CFL may cost more right away(this may not be true in your area, plus right now they're on sale almost everywhere) but they use less than 50% of the power of the old one, which means less electricity that you're paying for. That money you save can more than pay for them several times in their lifetime. Plus they last years longer than conventional lightbulbs, so you have to change them less often.

They help with climate change by using less power. A lot of energy we use at home comes from coal plants. The more power everyone uses, the more coal burns, the more gases go into the atmosphere. These lightbulbs, as we each buy more and more, means we use less and less coal for the same amount of light.

So you should change them to do your part. Besides in a lot of places they're starting to ban the old lightbulbs, so you might as well make the change now, instead of waiting until you're forced to.
