Why can't plastic grocery bags be recycled?

Answer:
They can and are -- bring your bags back to the store (most wal-marts have a drop off for bags).
They can.
they can, just dont throw them away, reuse them again, i usually do until they get ripped!
They can. They take them back at Wal-Mart in a green box near the door. All their bags are made from recycled ones.
They can. Several grocery stores in my area have bins to drop them off before you enter the store. Call around in your area
They can be. There are actually bins at Wal-Mart, and a few other corporations, at their entrances for the recycling of plastic bags.
In some cases, they can! They can be recycled by dropping them off at some super markets or recycling centers. Here's how:

If you want to try reusable bags so your bags aren't added to the landfill try this:

Also, there are bags that are biodegradable.

depends on the recycling method...they are usually low grade plastic...and do not recycle well...however in mass they can be melted into pelt form to be reused in other processes...and of course if you keep using them you are of course recycling.and just as a matter of interest there is no such thing as biodegradeable plastic...this was a marketing ploy from the 90's to make people think supermarkets were being green.now the trend is too charge for plastic bags or to move away from them completely and use paper...(more trees being felled ?)
Kroger lets you bring them in.
They can and they are recycled. I always recycle mine. I use them for trash bags when I run out of garbage bags. My daughter would use them to put a change of clothes in when she would go to a girlfriends home to spend the night. The church that I go to helps the homeless by feeding them a meal on Sunday nights. Sometimes they will want to take a plate with them so we give them a plastic bag to put a plate in. I also use mine to store different things in that I have in my home. The grocery store where I use to shop did not have enough bags there so we would take our own bags with us. There are many, many things that the plastic bags can be used for. I have always liked plastic better than paper.
Reusing plastic bags is not recycling them. Even if you use them as garbage bags, they still end up in a landfill. The real answer to this question is to use cloth bags.
They can be and my local grocery store gives a 5 cent a bag discount when you bring in your old ones to be reused for your own groceries.
they can, but they have to be shipped to a special recycling center after they end up in the recycle bin at the store.
Plastic bags can be recycled and with the value of oil, the value of "scrap film plastic" has risen. You usually don't find them accepted in curbside programs because they blow and cause litter concerns. If you can't reuse the plastic bag, take it to almost any large grocery store or retailer. Most offer boxes at their entrance areas for the collection of plastic bags, including the plastic covers used by dry cleaners.

The plastic bags can be made into a wide variety of plastic products, including more bags.
They can be recycled. Some stores have bins right at the front to recycle. If yours does not maybe send them an email with a suggestion. You can also reuse them. I save mine in a cloth tube and use them to bring my lunches in. Its not the best way to recyle them but atleast I get two to three uses from them.
they can but im not sure the walmart here has a place to turn them in,this just caught my attention wile reading other answers i never noticed it and it should be advertised
