If we stopped all pollution right this second will the pollutants in the air fade away or will they keep..?
Answer:
People are not the only producers of substances that we consider to be pollutants. Many of these substances are the byproducts of natural processes such as volcanoes, forest fires ignited by lightning, and decomposing organic matter. So even if we humans stopped polluting the air, there would still be a steady stream of pollutants from natural sources being added to the atmosphere. Fortunately there are other natural processes that absorb the pollutants, so that over time the pollution levels would reach some low - but not zero - value. Even pollutants that we consider to be permanent will decompose eventually, although the process may require millions of years.
The wonderful thing about this planet is that it heals itself. If we stopped producing polution right this second, in time MOST of it would be absorbed by the plants and soil, in a non harmful way to us. But, we humans seem to think that everything we do has to be difficult and or harmful and there are some polutants that the earth can't get rid of entirely. So they would continue to be there, producing acid rain and messing things up. But if we did stop making it, it would eventually dissapate and become thinner and thinner so it would far less affects than it does now while it is in the concentrated amounts that it is in some areas.
i would think the earth would begin to heal its self , just as the human body does. but unfortunatly the earth is so damn over populated its just not going to happen :(
the steps we are taking will help life on earth last a little longer. but its gona end someday!!
The pollutants would be cleared from the air by plants and rainfall, and by condensation like dew. As the moisture falls to earth, it cleanses contaminants out of the air. Particles would also settle out of the air on their own.
This depends entirely on the kind of pollutant. Some pollutants are extremely persistent in the environment. In fact, there's a class of chemicals called "persistent organic pollutants" (POPs) to describe this very problem. Polychlorinated bis-phenyls (PCBs) are one such chemical. They have a tendency to be extremely stable and to accumulate in the food chain. Other long-lasting examples of pollution include lead - a lot of the soils around cities are still heavily leaded due to gasoline exhaust and industrial lead emissions or lead paints, even though the era of using those things is long gone.
On the other hand, other kinds of pollution disappear almost instantly. Sulfur dioxides, for example, pretty much vanish when they get rained out. They only exist as pollution so long as we continue to produce them.
So, the answer is: it depends on the kind of pollution.
Hiya,
Given that air pollution has truly been with us for as long as we started it, one would have to find out what constitutes air pollution. Is is green house gas omissioning, camp fires, cows passing gas, non-cows passing gas, right up to those zippy little Smart cars. I'd say it's like Canadian taxes, applicable to everything. And here, there's even death taxes so stay out of Canada, too.
The environment could be revived but when I look around at what my neighbours are doing, I'm disgusted. A family of five that live across the street from me do nothing to sustain the environment except finally get rid of her old rustbucket to get another gas-guzzler and never re-cycle even her paper goods. I have a house filled with things that I refuse to commit to the Earth (like batteries, clothing, old make-up, old prescriptions to take to the pharmacies, even old CDs, and stuff).
We all of us have to get into the commitment of re-use, re-make, re-pair and save bundles and bundles of good environmentals!
Please help for the future of our World.
Cheers,
ShirleyG.
it would heal itself =]
thankfully!!
Right now, the Earth could recover. But it would take many years.
But, if we pass a "tipping point" for global warming we could alter the climate in a bad way for thousands of years. Most scientists think that is NO MORE THAN 20 years off.
I am sick and tired of people who want to control others. Why are you so insecure that you care about your neighbor's car? if you are so uneducated that you actually believe that man/women can control the temperature of the earth that is your problem not your neighbors. We should not have to recycle unless we want to. I am scared what is happening to society. Are we all going cuckoo? If you want to believe in the biggest hoax played on society in the history of mankind no one is stopping you but please do not force your uneducated beliefs on others.
What is in the airs tends to come down in the seas, and over the land eventually.
with the rains and winds .
ice on the north and south pole have found to contain polution that arrived by Air.
Much gets diluted ,as in the seas
NOTE
landfills keep leeching contaminants in to subteranean water supplies for hundreds of years or a lot more
If we actually stopped all activities that contribute to pollution and continued to refrain from any future polluting then yes, eventually, the air, ground and water would become as clean and pristine as it was meant to be. I say eventually because nothing worth the having happens overnight or at a fast pace. More to the point, it would take time for mother earth to undo all the damage we have both done and contributed to over the last 100 years or so.
