How could I convince you to ride a bicycle or walking to work?
I used to ride a bicycle to school in at the elementary level. I currently ride to work about 4 days per week, and I realized that it's good for the environment, help me in my fight with obesity, and helps me stick it to the Exxon Mobile to the tune of $30 per month.
I'm interested in creating a grass roots movement to encourage Americans to bike to work. I'm looking for ideas on how to convince people to bike or walk to work, so what would convince you?
Answer:
Approach them in such a way that they are open to the health benefits of doing these, and how much money they will save on gas or public transportation.
but let them think it was their idea, they are far more likely to do so.
Most people wont even think about doing something they feel like someone else is pushing on them
u could pay me $50 a day
You can't. I'm a pro polluter.
Convince the business I work for to relocate closer to my home. That should do it.. thanks.
Already walk. I'm lucky. Most live to far to do either. Good luck with your quest. Maybe one way would be for gas prices to get to $10 per gal. It would work for me.
for some it will be exercise, others will feel good about lessening environmental impact. some might do it because it is a fad. but most people just can't commute to work or school on their bikes. our cities are not built for bicycles, they are designed to segregate work, play, and home. it might help to concentrate your grassroots movement on people who can actually participate in it. for instance, compact urbanized areas, and maybe stay-at-home moms who could walk or bike their kids to school. i used to bike to work, but then i moved to the suburbs. i miss it. good luck!!
Well I already bike to work every day. A variety of issues convinced me.
1) Environmental benefit - minimizing my personal CO2 emissions.
2) Health benefit - biking for 2 hours/day is good exercise.
3) Financial benefit - saves loads of money on gas and car wear. I used to do a combination of biking and riding the light rail, but biking all the way saves me $40/month.
4) Bike trail - I found a bike trail which covers about two-thirds of my route to work. If it weren't for the bike path I'd still be using the light rail because I hate biking on busy streets. Too few have bike lanes.
Tell them that they'll have better looking legs.
Give me lower cost of living and a job/school that is less than 35 miles away, and I'll consider it.
I'm all for green living and better fitness, but my current situation does not allow for me to move. When I get to my school and my job, I do park and walk to wherever I need to go (and it's a rather large campus), but I can't really do anything better than that.
Life needs more opportunity for some.
The only way i could see you getting a mass of people to ride bikes is to shut the gas stations down . I ride my bike all the time and once in a blue moon do i see a bike rider unless its a Harley Davidson Take a real good look out there in the real world people just don't care whats going on with the planet or there health unless its taken from them . May just as well face it there isn't to many of us .
Well, you could start by finding me a job less than 5 miles from my home! That's about the limit I would ride a bicycle every day to work and back.
Unfortunately, right now, my job is 43 miles from my home, with not much chance of getting any closer.
Cure my porphyria so I don't blister in the outdoors.
I love the idea, but part of the problem is the infastructure. Our cities weren't built for people to walk around. Especially in the Western states, where cities didn't spring up until the car. In Europe, public transportation is easier becuase cities are smaller and people live closer to work. I live in the California Central Valley, and I know few people who live within 10 miles of work. Personally, I live 20 miles away to the only job I could get as a history teacher (I looked and applied, and this was it). There is no public transportation on the way, and if I were to go that route I would be looking at a long walk, 4 switchings of busses and probably a 3 hour per way commute. We need to end urban sprawl and start building communities with jobs near homes. That's my humble opinion
Providing bikepaths in town, is a huge issue. Other than kids riding near home, its simply not safe to ride a bike around town. Plus, itll be a one-way trip, cause your bike is probably going to be stolen. We Americans arent bike-friendly.
That is the tough argument.
I live about 3 miles from work. The route is flat. And I can now bike it w/o breaking a sweat.
But most people don't work that close to work. And even my route isn't perfect. Traffic can be dangerous at times. Really have to be on the ball. Biking everyday increases the risk I'd get into an accident.big deterrent.
Might be easier to convince them to use their bike for errands like picking up take out or going to Walgreens or getting a haircut. Those errands are usually in the 3 mile range. This is a great way to do things in cities where parking is a bear.
Last weekend I turned an errand into a pleasure/fitness ride. Road 11 miles to drop off a check at my landlord's house. Enjoyed the sun, explored parts of the cities I never been to, saw new restaurants, found a street fair... Was great, but most people would say you are crazy to ride 22 miles to do an errand. That is the mentality of Americans.
dont know
You can't. Most people who commute to work want to get home quickly after a long stressful day. You certainly won't bike.
Although, on weekends, you maybe able to convince people to bike to store, to a movie, ... since there is no dealine, no nagging boss to report to.
