What do you think about Zoo's?
Answer:
Zoos are a great place to see animals as long as they have places to run or roam. No cages! That just isn't fair to the animals
they are jails for animals who never even had their day in court. Destroying someone's home and then putting THEM in jail for it is a crime against nature and the concept of civilization.
well, I think some zoo's are great. I went to the Miami zoo and none of the animals are in cages. The ones outside are surrounded by motes (sp).
Yeah, I've been to some where the poor animals are in very small cages. I seen a large lion in a small cage and it was pacing back and forth. You can tell it was unhappy.
I feel zoo's are great! Most zoo's, that I have seen, have adequate space, and are properly set up for that given animal. Yes, we need to keep the creatures that are unfortunately dying off on us! Its very important!
Zoos have really come a long way since their beginnings many centuries ago. The first zoos were in Europe and were really the private collections of the wealthy. It was a way to show off to their friends that they had travelled to exotic places and collected unusual specimens of plants and animals. Over time, zoos became public but they were pretty sad. Animals were confined to small hardscaped areas - concrete walls, metal cages, etc. Little was known about the needs of the animals. Now many zoos have become important centers for animal research. By studying the animals in their native habitat, zoos try to emulate the animals' natural surroundings and provide them with enrichment activities that keep them stimulated. Many of the animals in zoos have been rehabilitated from injuries or were captive raised so they would never survive if released into the wild anyway. Zoos that belong to accredited organizations (AZA for example ) play very important roles in animal research which goes back to benefit the animals in the wild. Much of what we know about the different stresses that are affecting wild animal populations (disease, habitat loss, poaching, etc.) have been identified by zoo staff conducting research along with universities and wildlife organizations. In the case of some animals that are highly endangered, the few animals left in the world are only alive because they are cared for in zoos. Public awareness of the plight of many of these animals in the wild has only happened because people gain an interest in them after seeing them at the zoo. I guarantee you wouldn't really care about what is happening to the panda population in China if you didn't have an opportunity to see them in real life at a zoo (if you don't live near a zoo with pandas, check this out http://www.zooatlanta.org/animals_panda_... ) Unfortunately, there are some "zoos" that still exist (the roadside alligator farms for example) that aren't really ethical in my opinion and exist for no good reason other than making money for someone. I truly believe that the good that is done by accredited zoos far outweighs the negatives.
